    Abstract: Novel polymers having high activity as cationic surface-active agents are prepared by the addition polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated aromatic sulfonium salts, e.g., ##STR1## When such polymers are heated and/or dried, they are irreversibly converted to inert, nonionic residues without the elimination of odorous by-products. The novel sulfonium salt polymers having relatively low molecular weight and low charge density are particularly useful as surfactants or emulsifiers in the emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers such as styrene, butadiene, alkyl acrylates and the like. The polymers having high molecular weight and high charge density are useful as thickeners and flocculants.

    Abstract: Water-compatible compositions are described which consist essentially of at least one resinous compound whose backbone is linear or substantially linear and consists essentially of at least one oxyaryleneoxyalkylene or oxyaryleneoxy(1,3-(2-hydroxy)alkylene) unit and which bears at least two functional organic moieties through which cross-linking can occur (preferably groups having active hydrogen, more preferably aliphatic hydroxyl groups) and at least one terminal carbamoylpyridinium group covalently bonded through the ring nitrogen atom combined with an acid curable cross-linking agent. The compositions are useful coating compositions which find particular utility in cathodic electrodeposition. The compounds are prepared, for example, by reacting a linear or substantially linear epoxy resin with a carbamoylpyridine in the presence of sufficient amount of a Bronsted acid and water to stabilize the carbamoylpyridinium salt thus formed.

    Abstract: A scrap-free, substantially solid phase, relatively low temperature economical process for rapidly making plastic articles from resinous powders wherein the resultant articles can comprise various polymers including oriented polymers; polymers with a high practical heat distortion temperature; expanded polymers; ultra high molecular weight polymers; blended structures of two or more materials; or multilayered structures. The resinous powders are initially compressed into briquettes, which briquettes are heated to a temperature in the range from about the alpha transition temperature to less than the melting point or melt temperature of the polymer therein to both somewhat soften and sinter the briquettes. The sintered briquettes are forged under conditions which permit substantial plug flow deformation into preforms whereby fusion of the sintered resin powder particles occurs.

The resulting latex contains nonionic particles to which are bound the reactive polymeric surfactant which forms a layer containing stabilizing "ionic" groups such as sulfonium groups, quaternary ammonium groups or sulfonate groups chemically bound at or near the surface of the polymer particles, which are dispersed in aqueous media. The cationic latexes are particularly suitable for beater additives and organic pigments.

    Abstract: A fibrous product containing (a) a papermaking grade of pulp, (b) a structured particle latex having pH independent cationic groups bound at or near the particle surface and (c) a co-additive. The pulp is represented by unbleached softwood kraft. The latex is represented by a structured-particle latex having (a) a core of a copolymer of styrene and butadiene (b) an encapsulating layer of styrene, butadiene and vinylbenzyl chloride which is reacted with 2-(dimethylamino) ethanol to form quaternary ammonium groups. The co-additive is represented by a hydrolyzed polyacrylamide having a degree of polymerization of 5500. To an aqueous slurry of the pulp are added the latex and an aqueous solution of the co-additive, the resulting suspension is dewatered and dried by heating.

    Abstract: Structured-particle latexes are prepared from nonionic or slightly cationic latexes, either preformed or polymerized in situ, by emulsion polymerizing monomeric materials which include an ethylenically unsaturated, activated-halogen monomer such as vinylbenzyl chloride in the absence of a sufficient amount of a surfactant to initiate new particles whereby the activated-halogen monomer is copolymerized on the surface of the existing particles which are dispersed in an aqueous media. The resulting structured-particle latex may then be reacted with a nucleophile such as dimethyl sulfide or trimethyl amine to form a latex having stabilizing "onium" groups such as sulfonium groups or quaternary ammonium groups chemically bound at or near the surface of the polymer particles which are dispersed in aqueous media. The cationic latexes are suitable for coatings and organic pigments.
