  • Patent number: 7567677
Abstract: A noise reduction scheme is incorporated into a computer system for reducing environmental background noise when a user is listening to audio output through a standard set of headphones. The noise reduction scheme utilizes the processing power of the computer system as well as built-in components of the computer for enhancing the audio quality heard by the user. Environmental background noise is received by a built-in microphone, wherein a reciprocal noise canceling signal is generated by the computer's microprocessor. The reciprocal noise canceling signal is then mixed with audio from the computer system for reducing the environmental background noise heard by a user.

  • Patent number: 6631101
Abstract: Battery-powered computer systems have evolved into multi-media systems which can playback two-hour movies stored on Digital Versatile Disks (DVDs). However, battery lives are generally too short to permit users to view an entire movie without interruption, requiring users who resume playback to fast-forward to an approximate point where the interruption occurred. Accordingly, the present invention provides system, method, and software embodiments which monitor battery status during DVD playback, and upon detection of low battery level, record a current playback position. Subsequent to the replacement or recharge of the battery, playback may be automatically resumed at the recorded playback position, thereby saving both time and power in recovering from the interruption. Other embodiments omit battery monitoring by periodically recording playback position and facilitate recovery from interruptions of data-transfer operations.

  • Patent number: 6567870
Abstract: Apparatus and method for PCI bus extension, via a PCI bridge circuit, as well as PCI device function, via a PCI device circuit and I/O connector, all on a single I/O card. Further, the present invention provides for stackable, partial-height PCI cards. Further, provided are stackable, partial-height I/O card mounting plates. In yet another embodiment, a functional PCI extension card also provides one or more right-angle connector sockets in order to allow multiple additional PCI cards at right angles to the functional PCI extension card.

  • Patent number: 6396480
Abstract: An entertainment system has a personal computer as the heart of the system with a large screen VGA quality monitor as the display of choice. The system has digital satellite broadcast reception, decompression and display capability with multiple radio frequency remote control devices which transmit self identifying signals and have power adjustment capabilities. These capabilities are used to provide context sensitive groups of keys which may be defined to affect only selected applications running in a windowing environment. In addition, the remote control devices combine television and VCR controls with standard personal computer keyboard controls. A keyboard remote also integrates a touchpad which is food contamination resistant and may also be used for user verification. Included in the system is the ability to recognize verbal communications in video signals and maintain a database of such text which is searchable to help identify desired programming in real time.

  • Patent number: 6038614
Abstract: A multimedia system has multiple media sources switchable under user control to a common set of output presentation devices. A table stores parameter values for each media source separately, so that selection of a source changes the parameters of the displayed media to values appropriate for that source. A user input device has selection keys, and also has keys for modifying the values of the parameters. The modified parameter values are stored in the table, so that they persist when the same media device is selected at a later time.
