Abstract: The present invention relates to a GPS-based safety system designed for improving safety for construction workers and employees inside a construction zone or work zone on a roadway. The system includes a software application configured to be installed in a user device for displaying a push notification and playing an audio alert for alerting the driver of a vehicle to reduce the speed of the vehicle. The notifications are provided when the vehicle in which the user device is positioned approaches a construction zone and is within a predetermined distance from the construction zone. One or more GPS transmitter devices are positioned near the construction site and a determination of distance between the vehicle and the GPS transmitter device is performed wherein the location of the user device is determined using GPS satellites. The notifications may include an instruction message to reduce the speed of the vehicle.
