  • Patent number: 9489134
Abstract: A method of operating a medium access device includes writing by a writer information in a logical storage space of a storage medium which has a physical storage space comprising two or more layers of physical storage locations, each storage location having a physical address, the logical storage space comprising storage locations within a first layer of the layers and within a subsequent layer of the layers, the storage locations in the logical storage space having contiguously numbered logical addresses; storing in an address limit memory at least a value for a parameter indicating a maximum value of the logical addresses of the storage locations in the first layer; and changing by a processor the maximum value in the address limit memory and to provide an output when the maximum value cannot be changed to avoid attempting changing the maximum value.

  • Patent number: 8144555
Abstract: Compatibility information embedded in an optical medium modifies actions allowed by predetermined non-compatible optical disc drives on the optical medium, such as optical disc drives that may suffer damage if certain actions are performed on the optical medium. For instance, a compatibility engine of the optical disc drive applies compatibility information read from an optical medium to determine restrictions to impose on the use of the optical medium, such as restricting the optical disc drive from writing to the optical medium, reading from the optical medium or performing any operations until an update to the optical disc drive firmware is performed either automatically or by display of a compatibility user interface at an information handling system associated with the optical disc drive. In one embodiment, the compatibility information identifies incompatible optical disc drives and firmware versions by unique identifiers.

  • Patent number: 7852724
Abstract: Expiration information stored on an optical medium is applied to determine an expiration date of the optical medium that provides a predetermined reliability of information archived on the optical medium, such as a predetermined acceptable defect level of the information at the expiration date. An expiration engine associated with an information handling system or optical disc drive determines the expiration date from one or more factors, such as the manufacture date of read-only optical media, the initialization date of recordable optical media, a quality rating associated with a defect growth rate over time of the optical media, and a desired reliability. In one embodiment, the expiration engine writes expiration information to the optical media, such as a date stamp at initialization of a recordable optical medium. Alternatively, an expiration date is stored on an information handling system to provide expiration warnings a predetermined time before the expiration date.

  • Patent number: 7355937
Abstract: A method and device for recording information signals on a partly recorded writable record carrier (11), e.g., an optical disc. An information signal represents at least one information unit. The record carrier has a recording track which includes preformed track position information indicative of locations for recording the information units. From the information signal, a modulated signal is generated having successive frames, each frame including a synchronizing signal. The modulated signal is recorded at a one of the locations, while maintaining a fixed relationship between the track position information and the synchronizing signals. In the event that the location is after and adjacent to an already recorded location, the recording is started at a link position (31) before the end of a last frame of the earlier recorded information signal, at a predefined distance before a first synchronizing signal (30) of the modulated signal.

  • Patent number: 7283723
Abstract: A method and device for recording real time information on a record carrier, e.g. video on an optical disc. The information is arranged according to a recording format, e.g. DVD video, for being playable in standardized players. The information is subdivided into units and playback parameters for reproducing sequences of the units are included in the units. The format prescribes forward pointers to units that are located at a large distance from the unit which includes the forward pointers. However for home recording it is required that a recording is made in one pass, i.e. the video is to be recorded directly at its final location without a large buffer. So the device has a small buffer (30), and a processing unit (20,28) for determining pointers to nearby units based on the buffer contents, while values for pointers pointing far forward are set arbitrarily, based on nearby units and/or default values indicating that the unit intended to be pointed to does not exist.

  • Publication number: 20070230299
Abstract: There is described a method of partitioning data on a data carrier arranged to be a write-once item. The method comprises a first step of writing video data content to a first region of the carrier, a second step of writing other data content to a second region of the carrier, and a third step writing substantially mutually independent first and second directories for recording data layouts of their corresponding first and second regions respectively, for example during finalisation. Such partitioning of the video data content and other data content, for example still picture data, is of benefit in rendering the data carrier, for example implemented as a DVD R data carrier, more compatible with other data carrier formats, for example DVD RW.

  • Publication number: 20070136516
Abstract: An optical disc (1) for storing digital data, comprising a first storage area (10) for storing a first type of digital data and a second storage area (20) for storing a second type of digital data. Each of the first and second areas comprises a user-data area (11, 21). Furthermore, the storage areas (10, 20) are logically independent. The second storage area (20) has a defect management area (22a, 22b) associated with the user-data area (21) of the second storage area (20) for storing defect management data.

  • Patent number: 7200073
Abstract: A method and device for recording video on a record carrier (11), e.g. an optical disc. The information is arranged according to a recording format, e.g. DVD-video, for being playable in standardized players. The video information is subdivided into cells and playback parameters for reproducing sequences of the cells are included in control information. The format prescribes that within the recording area the control information precedes the video information for playback functions of the recorded video. However for home recording it is preferable that a recording is made in one pass, i.e. the video is to be recorded directly at its final location. Therefore the recorder has a control unit (20) for performing the following steps: first creating a free area (12) by selecting a starting point (13) within the recording area different from the beginning of the recording area, thereafter recording the real-time information from the starting point (13), and recording the control information in said free area (12).
