  • Publication number: 20090238323
Abstract: A real time clock comprises a counter which stores a count value, the count value representing a time signal. The counter may be written, for example by a host processor (not shown), such that the time signal can be set to any desired value. The real time clock comprises a check register that stores a check value. The content of the check register (i.e. the check value) is modified each time a write operation is performed on the counter. For example, the content of the check register can be updated by a control signal each time a write operation is performed on the counter. The check value stored in the check register is used for determining whether a write operation performed on the counter is an authorized write operation or an unauthorized write operation. The check value may be incremented each time a write operation is performed, replaced with a new random number each time a write operation is performed, or a combination of both.

  • Patent number: 7581450
Abstract: A sensor for measuring material properties such as the relaxation modulus of a material in situ and a method of measuring material properties of a material are disclosed. The sensor may be substantially embedded in the material, and includes a deformable driver. When actuated, the deformable driver may create a stress in the adjacent material. The movement or deformation of the driver may be measured with a sensing device, for example a strain gage mounted on a surface thereof. The stress in the adjacent material may be measured with a second sensing device, for example a pressure sensor. The measured movement and stress over a predetermined period of time may he used to determine the relaxation modulus of the material.

  • Publication number: 20090143825
Abstract: A distal tibia plating system includes anterolateral and medial plates. The anterolateral plate includes a shaft with both threaded first fastener holes and compression slots along its length. The head includes a first row of four threaded fastener holes arranged transversely to the longitudinal axis, a non-threaded compression screw hole, and a plurality of distal tabs. Each tab includes a ring with a single threaded fastener hole and a bridge that couples the ring to the distal end of the plate. The bridge is configured to bend preferentially in a desired direction and to allow tab removal. The medial plate is a low profile plate including a shaft and a relatively enlarged distal head. Several fasteners can be used with the plates. A plate holder is provided to maneuver the plates subcutaneously.

  • Publication number: 20090088807
Abstract: A polyaxial locking screw system includes a bone plate defining a plate hole with an inner spherical surface and a relatively harder split polyaxial bushing with a outer spherical surface provided within the plate hole for receiving a bone screw. In one embodiment, the plate is formed from titanium alloy, while the bushing is formed from a cobalt chrome alloy. The outer surface of the polyaxial bushing includes a plurality of spikes. When the screw is inserted into the bushing, since the bushing material is considerably harder than the plate material, the forceful expansion of the bushing during screw insertion causes the spikes to penetrate into the inner spherical surface of the hole, thereby increasing the frictional engagement of the bushing to the plate to lock the screw at a desired angle.

  • Publication number: 20080297230
Abstract: This invention concerns interfacing to electronic circuits or systems operating at low temperature or ultra-low temperature using complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Low temperature in this case refers to cryogenic temperatures in particular, but not exclusively, to the 4.2 K region. Ultra-low temperatures here refers to the sub-1 K range, usually accessed using dilution refrigerator systems. The electronic circuits comprise a controller (for writing and manipulation), an observer (for readout and measurement) circuits, or both, fabricated from ultra-thin silicon-on-insulator (SOI) CMOS technology.

  • Publication number: 20080274139
Abstract: The present invention pertains to a Salmonella microorganism having an attenuating mutation which disrupts the expression of a gene located within the Spi2 pathogenicity island, and an auxotrophic mutation. The microorganism therefore has a double mutation which helps prevent reactivity of the microorganism while maintaining the effectiveness of the microorganism to elicit an immune response. The present invention also pertains to vaccine compositions and methods for treating and preventing a Salmonella infection in a patient.

  • Publication number: 20080230440
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the upgrading of heavy petroleum oils of high viscosity and low API gravity that are typically not suitable for pipelining without the use of diluents. The method comprises introducing a particulate heat carrier into an up-flow reactor, introducing the feedstock at a location above the entry of the particulate heat carrier, allowing the heavy hydrocarbon feedstock to interact with the heat carrier for a short time, separating the vapors of the product stream from the particulate heat carrier and liquid and byproduct solid matter, collecting a gaseous and liquid product mixture comprising a mixture of a light fraction and a heavy fraction from the product stream, and using a vacuum tower to separate the light fraction as a substantially bottomless product and the heavy fraction from the product mixture.

  • Publication number: 20080234605
Abstract: A catheter guidewire for facilitating introduction of a flexible catheter into the human body (e.g., into the bladder) has a proximal end having a first stiffness which is sufficient to facilitate guidance of a stiff plastic expansion sheath through the tissue. A distal end of the guide wire has a second stiffness, substantially less than the first stiffness, to avoid damage to internal walls of the bladder. Preferably, the guide wire incorporates an intermediate portion having a stiffness between the first stiffness value and the second stiffness value.

  • Publication number: 20080227657
Abstract: A method of separating species in a mixture of molecules, particles or atoms and collecting the separated species is described. The method comprises the steps of converting by ionization the species in the mixture to gas phase ions, separating the gas phase ions according to their mass charge ratio and/or mobility and collecting the separated ions. The system includes ionizing means such as electrospray to form the gas phase ions. The gas phase ions are separated by filtering, or in time or in space and soft-landed for collection such as on a surface.

  • Patent number: 7407019
Abstract: A method of dynamically controlling open hole pressure within a wellbore having a drill string positioned therein. The method comprising the steps of pumping a fluid down the drill string, into an annulus formed by the drill string and the interior of the wellbore, and then subsequently up the annulus to the surface of the ground; selectively applying wellhead pressure to the annulus through selectively pumping an additional quantity of the fluid or a quantity of a secondary fluid across the annulus; and, controlling the application of wellhead pressure applied to the annulus by controlling one, or both, of (a) the operation of a wellhead pressure control choke, and (b) the flow rate of the additional quantity of fluid or the secondary fluid pumped across the annulus, to thereby maintain open hole pressure within a desired range.
