Patent number: 6502909Abstract: A media filter cabinet for a gas furnace is sized to accept a high-efficiency media filter while being easily adaptable to accept a standard size filter. A perforated duct flange on one side of the cabinet permits ease of installation since the flange can be bent at 90 or 180 degrees along the perforations, or removed, depending on the type of duct the cabinet is installed with. The cabinet is adapted to fit a standard filter by using a removable bracket and a wire to retain the standard filter within the cabinet. With the removal of a front door and a back side of the cabinet, the cabinet collapses to diminish its shipping size. In one embodiment, the cabinet is in kit form which is easily assembled.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2000Date of Patent: January 7, 2003Assignee: Carrier CorporationInventors: Robert C. Publication number: 20020172244Abstract: A laser diode bar is separated into laser diode dice after bonding the laser diode bar to a submount. In one embodiment a GaAs laser diode bar is soldered to a diamond submount with gold—tin solder. The difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between the submount material and the laser bar material is sufficient to create tensile stress in the laser diode bar and cleave the laser diode bar into dice as the assembly cools from the soldering temperature. Use of an electrically insulating submount material allows the laser diodes to be connected in series. Diamond blanks that are essentially un-metallized submounts are used during assembly to avoid bowing, or “smile”, of the laser diode assembly.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2001Publication date: November 21, 2002Inventors: Peng-Chih Li, Todd Terry, Robert Lang

Publication number: 20020159488Abstract: A laser package comprises a laser diode source having a first Fabry-Perot cavity between a highly reflective back facet and low reflective front facet for providing a first light output for an optical application. A light monitor is positioned adjacent to the back facet and aligned to receive a second light output from the laser diode back facet. A pigtail fiber having a lensed fiber input end is positioned from the laser diode front facet to form an optical coupling region and is aligned relative to the lasing cavity to receive the first light output into the fiber, the light output exiting the package for coupling to the application. A portion of the first light output from the lasing cavity is reflected off the lensed fiber input end with a portion directed back into the lasing cavity and another portion reflected off of the laser diode front facet.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 24, 2001Publication date: October 31, 2002Inventors: Edmund L. Publication number: 20020159693Abstract: A microlens on the end of an optical fiber has reduced back reflections to a light source, such as a pump laser diode. In a particular embodiment, the microlens is lapped on two radii, at least one of which is offset from the center axis of the fiber, to form a point on the end of the fiber, thus reducing a surface for reflecting light back to the light source. In another embodiment, the microlens is formed with two different side surface angles to accommodate misalignment of the light source to the fiber mount. In another embodiment a Fresnel lens structure on the end of the fiber operates optically as an angled chisel lens.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 24, 2001Publication date: October 31, 2002Applicant: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: Edmund L. Publication number: 20020102061Abstract: An optical switch is fabricated on a single substrate and switches planar waveguides into and out of alignment with each other. The switch is constructed by selective deposition and etching of layers that make up the desired waveguides and physical structures of the switch. The physical structures include a movable structure upon which one of the waveguides resides, the movable structure being freed from the substrate by deep etching underneath it. A heat source may be used to provide heat to the movable structure, which causes its thermal expansion and resulting movement of the waveguide on it into or out of alignment with another waveguide. A third waveguide may be located so as to align with the waveguide on the movable structure when it is at an ambient temperature.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2000Publication date: August 1, 2002Inventor: Robert Lang

Patent number: 5915154Abstract: The apparatus for conveying finely powdered material from a reservoir includes a suction/pressure unit that projects into the reservoir. A gas is introduced into the suction/pressure unit and is mixed with the finely powdered material that is sucked into suction/pressure unit from the reservoir to form a powder/gas mixture and this mixture is discharged. Compressed air blows into the reservoir in a finely dispersed manner to fluidized the finely powdered material so that the extraction of the finely powdered material from the reservoir is facilitated.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1997Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Assignee: Oce Printing Systems GmbHInventors: Bernd Schoch, Edmund Creutzmann, Robert Lang

Patent number: 5040188Abstract: A switchable DFB (distributed feedback) laser which includes a waveguide layer having an impressed diffraction grating composed of two or more superposed subgratings having different respective grating constants. The diffraction grating is either frequency modulated (FIG. 3a) or amplitude modulated (FIG. 3b) or is a mixed form of these two types of modulation. Each subgrating can be employed to generate an emission wavelength that is a function of the grating period. By changing the temperature or changing the injection current, the effective index of refraction of the laser is changed, thus enabling the setting of an emission wavelength which is a function of the modulated diffraction grating. The switchable DFB laser according to the present invention may be employed for optical data transmission and particularly in narrowband wavelength multiplex operation.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1990Date of Patent: August 13, 1991Assignee: Alcatel N.V.Inventors: Robert Lang, Albrecht Mozer

Patent number: 4839954Abstract: A manipulation device, particularly for use with an industrial robot, which has a plurality of double-jaw grippers on a turret base member. The manipulation device includes a suction member for workpiece handling which is arranged on the turret base member parallel to a rotational axis thereof. The individual grippers are attached to the turret base member at a predetermined inclined angle. Additional joining aids are provided on the grippers to prevent buckling of hoses to be mounted on fittings of the workpiece during a slip-on operation. The required amount of hose to be utilized is respectively cut off at an "IR side" of a hose offering unit from hoses stored on hose reels. The end of the hose to be mounted is also widened in a preparatory station. The manipulation device executes all handling and joining operations for mounting a hose onto a corresponding fitting.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1987Date of Patent: June 20, 1989Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventors: Gunter Hartmann, Ralf Swoboda, Robert Lang

Patent number: 3937323Abstract: A package for the complete and protective enclosure of an article is described in which the article is fully enclosed by a continuous surface of rigid or semi-rigid material so as to form a housing. The housing is banded by a section of sufficiently reduced wall thickness to permit the frangible separation of the housing into two segments which are then drawn apart with the enclosed article being engaged by one of the segments for withdrawal from the other segment. The article can be fully assembled or partially assembled while in the package and means are described in the latter instance for dispensing the fully assembled article automatically in the course of removing it from the package.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 1974Date of Patent: February 10, 1976Assignee: Bio-Medical Sciences, Inc.Inventors: Zsigmond L.
