    Abstract: The present disclosure provides isolated phototrophic cells for producing hydrogen and methods for use thereof. The methods involve inducing endo-hydrogenase expression in the phototrophic cells through the use of a regulatable promoter and harvesting light energy for hydrogen production. In preferred embodiments the hydrogenase is a member of the Hyq family of endo-hydrogenases and the isolated phototrophic cell is a Rhodopseudomonas palustris cell.
