Publication number: 20240121242Abstract: Some embodiments help manage cybersecurity insider risk. An authorized user influence pillar value is based on an influence signal representing the user's actual or potential influence in a computing environment. An authorized user access pillar value is based on an access signal representing the user's actual or potential access to resources. An impact risk value is calculated as a weighted combination of the pillar values. In response, an embodiment automatically adjusts a cybersecurity characteristic, such as a security risk score, security group membership, threat detection mechanism, or alert threshold. In some cases, impact risk is also based on a cumulative potential exfiltration anomaly access signal. In some cases, impact risk is based on one or more values which represent user public visibility, user social network influence, brand damage risk, resource mission criticality, access request response speed or success rate, or a known cybersecurity attack.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 19, 2022Publication date: April 11, 2024Inventors: Erin K. MIYAKE, Sudarson TM, Robert MCCANN, Maria SIDDIQUI, Ashish MISHRA, Talhah Munawar MIR, Sakshi MITTAL, Jovan KALAJDJIESKI, Diego RUVALCABA

Patent number: 8959159Abstract: A computer implemented method for filtering unwanted bulk email in an email system and providing a positive user experience is provided. The method enables protection of email users from unsolicited bulk email using user-provided data on user interactions at both a user storage level and a global level with an email system. Metadata on user interactions with messages is collected. Messages are received by the system and evaluated using a global filter which assigns a score resulting in a message action. The action may be message delivery, message non-delivery or message routing, based on a score assigned by the global filter. When the message is delivered to user storage, the message may be examined relative to the metadata, and may alter the message action to an action different than the message action resulting from the score. Metadata for a plurality of users is returned to the global filter for use in making filtering future messages and modifies the global filter.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2010Date of Patent: February 17, 2015Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Krishna C. Vitaldevara, Eliot C. Gillum, Jason D Walter, Robert McCann, Vasantha K. Vemula, Mehrdad Bidgoli

Patent number: 8370930Abstract: Detecting spam from metafeatures of an email message. As a part of detecting spam, the email message is accessed and a distribution of numerical values is accorded to a set of features of the email message. It is determined whether the distribution of numerical values accorded the set of features of the email message is consistent with that of spam. Access is provided to the determination of whether the email message has a distribution of numerical values accorded the set of features that is consistent with that of spam.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2008Date of Patent: February 5, 2013Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chad Mills, Ryan Colvin, Kevin Chan, Robert McCann, Aleksander Kolcz

Patent number: 8028031Abstract: Determining email filtering type based on sender classification. Incoming email is accessed and a sender of the incoming email is identified. The reputation of the sender of the incoming email is determined. An email sender classification is made based on the reputation of the sender. A determination of the type of filtering operations to be performed by an email filter on the email is made based on the classification. The parameters of the type of filtering operations to be performed are determined. The parameters of the type of filtering operations to be performed are provided to the email filter.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2008Date of Patent: September 27, 2011Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Ryan Colvin, Chad Mills, Robert McCann, Geoff Hulten, Harry Katz, Eriola Kruja, Xin Huang, Joshua Korb

Patent number: 7862764Abstract: Electromagnetic (EM) drying of a plugged ware is provided that includes subjecting the ware to an axially non-uniform EM radiation field that causes more EM radiation to be dissipated in either of the plugged regions than in the unplugged region. The EM radiation field is provided by a configurable applicator system that includes a feed waveguide and a conveyor path. The feed waveguide includes configurable slots. The configurable applicator system can be set to selectively vary the amount of EM radiation dissipated by each ware along the longitudinal axis of each ware as a function of ware position along the conveying path, thereby enhancing the EM drying process.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2008Date of Patent: January 4, 2011Assignee: Corning IncorporatedInventors: James Anthony Feldman, Jacob George, Kevin Robert McCann, Rebecca Lynn Schulz, Gary Graham Squier, Elizabeth Marie Vileno

Patent number: 6783322Abstract: A pump system, including an impeller and an impeller shaft, which has one end secured to the impeller and another end that may be coupled to a motor to drive the impeller. The pump system further includes a substantially liquid-proof barrier which has an opening through which the impeller shaft extends. The opening in the barrier is sealed with a shaft sealing system that includes a supply chamber fluidly coupled with a cavity. The cavity surrounds, and is at least partially bounded by, the impeller shaft. The shaft sealing system further includes a pressure mechanism that is configured to pressurize lubrication matter contained within the supply chamber and cavity, so as to inhibit liquid from passing along the impeller shaft through the cavity and thereby penetrating the liquid-proof barrier. The pressure mechanism is further configured to vary pressure of the lubrication matter based on atmospheric pressure surrounding the pump system.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2002Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: Roper Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Robert B. Ray, Joseph H. Reidy, Robert A. McCann, Steven J. Schoebrun
