    Abstract: A defribrillator comprises first and second electrodes (A, B) for application to a patient, a voltage source (60), and an output circuit for connecting the voltage source across the electrodes upon the occurrence of a control signal (64). The output circuit includes a first current path connecting one side of the voltage source to the first electrode (A) and a second current path connecting the other side of the voltage source to the second electrode (B). Each of the current paths contains at least one solid state switching device USD1 (bo) or IGBT1. The switching device(s) USD1 (bo) in at least one of the current paths has no external control and characteristics similar to a Shockley diode.

The invention is further directed to an optical bio-disc for performing an immunohematologic assay including a substrate having encoded information associated therewith. The encoded information may be readable by a disc drive assembly to control rotation of the disc. The disc may also include at least one target zone or capture zone associated with the substrate. The target zone is disposed at a predetermined location relative to a center of the substrate. The disc further includes a plurality of capture antibodies immobilized within the target zone, a flow channel, fluidic circuit, or analysis chamber associated with the target zone, and an input site in fluid communication with the analysis chamber.

    Abstract: According to one or more embodiments, the present invention is directed at many implementations of detectors utilized in bio-drives and in combination with a variety of different optical analysis discs or optical bio-discs. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the detector is a multi-segmented detector. According to another embodiment of the present invention, the detector is a radially long split detector. The detectors are segmented to implement noise-cancellation mechanism that enhances the overall signal-to-noise ratio. The detector embodiments produce clear and distinguishable signals that allow cell counting to be conducted efficiently in hardware. Another embodiment is a cost-efficient analyzer named a biological compact disc (BCD™) analyzer that comprises an optical disc drive and a controller into which is placed a field programmable gate array (FPGA) where all the digital logic is performed.

Preferably, the titanium dioxide particles are also treated with an organic compound such as a polyhydric alcohol, an alkanolamine, a polysiloxane or a fatty acid.
