  • Patent number: 5658254
Abstract: A safety syringe assembly includes a hypodermic syringe having a syringe barrel with opposed proximal and distal ends. A needle cannula is mounted to the distal end of the barrel. A collar mounted around the syringe barrel includes at least one radially inwardly directed recess. A safety shield is positioned over the syringe barrel for telescoping movement from a proximal position where the needle cannula is exposed to a distal position where the syringe safety shield protectively surrounds the needle cannula. The safety shield is rotatable with respect to the barrel when the safety shield is in its proximal position. The safety shield includes an inside surface having at least one inwardly directed projection sized and positioned to pass through the recess in the collar when the safety shield is rotated with respect to the barrel to align the projection and the recess. When alignment is achieved the safety shield can be moved form the proximal position to the distal position.

  • Patent number: 5632732
Abstract: A shielded needle assembly has an elongate needle with a proximal end, a distal end and a passageway therethrough. The assembly has a needle hub that has a proximal end, a distal end and an outside surface with an axial opening therethrough to receive and hold the needle with the distal end of the needle projecting distally axially. The assembly also has an elongate shield with a proximal end, a distal end and a sidewall with an elongate opening from its distal end to its proximal end. At least a section of the shield is substantially cylindrical and has an exterior surface. The shield is operable between an open position, where the needle is exposed for use by passage through the elongate opening, a closed position, where the shield substantially obstructs access to the needle, and a latched position, where the elongate opening is substantially obstructed and the shield is prevented from inadvertent movement to the open position.

  • Patent number: 5599313
Abstract: A needle shield assembly of the present invention includes a needle cannula having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen therethrough. A hub having a proximal end for connecting to a medical instrument and a distal end connected to the proximal end of the needle cannula is provided. A base member is connected to the hub. An elongate needle shield includes a proximal end hingedly connected to the base member, a distal end and a longitudinal axis therebetween. The needle shield includes a longitudinal opening therein. The needle shield is capable of rotating from a first position exposing at least the distal end the needle cannula and a second position wherein the needle cannula is within the longitudinal opening of the needle shield. A sleeve having a longitudinal slot is rotatably connected to the needle shield.

  • Patent number: 5584816
Abstract: A hardpack shield employable with a medical delivery device utilizing the pivoting-type needle guard or barrier assembly. The shield, which may be formed from a semi-rigid yet puncture-resistant material such as polypropylene, may be configured for mating engagement with a component of the pivotable barrier assembly so as to enable a user to safely manipulate the barrier assembly respective of a medical delivery device to which the piercing element and barrier assembly are affixed. The hardpack shield is configured for ready removal by a user while providing a secondary barrier against inadvertent needlestick injury, with a piercing element.

  • Patent number: 5533970
Abstract: A retractable needle syringe includes a barrel having an inside surface defining a chamber, an open proximal end and a distal end. An elongate plunger is slidably positioned in fluid-tight engagement with the inside surface of the barrel. The plunger includes a distal end, a proximal end and a radially directed projection on its distal end. A movable carrier is positioned in fluid-tight engagement with the inside surface of the barrel. The carrier includes an outside surface, a distal end, a proximal end, and a passageway therethrough in fluid communication with the chamber. The proximal end of the carrier includes an open-ended groove which is sized and shaped to receive the plunger projection. The groove includes an axial portion and a circumferential portion. The plunger is movable axially so that the plunger projection can enter and exit the axial portion of the groove.
