  • Patent number: 9792928
Abstract: A technique includes in a data storage device, sensing a plurality of data streams from a track of storage media as the media moves in a given direction using a plurality of read elements such that at least one of the read elements is redundant. The technique includes combining the data streams to generate a data stream indicating data read from the track.

  • Patent number: 9588898
Abstract: A data storage system incorporating a write-caching subsystem that implements a steady-state media-based cache is described. The steady-state of the media-based cache can be obtained by directing non-sequential write commands and data received from the host device to multiple independent cache locations and, thereafter, selectively copying or moving such data between the caches so that none of the caches are either too full or too empty. In this manner, a non-sequential write command can be cached in a power-safe manner until it is efficient and/or convenient to write such data to the mainstore portion of the physical media.

  • Patent number: 8873192
Abstract: Techniques for operating tape heads are provided. In an example, a method includes detecting a potential at a sensor region, determining a target potential using a transfer function, and applying the target potential to an effector region.

  • Patent number: 6572046
Abstract: The present method for unlocking a single reel tape cartridge locking mechanism in a tape cartridge load operation aids the release of the tape cartridge locking mechanism by manipulating the supply reel motor which is engaged to the single reel tape cartridge in a manner that causes the stuck tape cartridge locking mechanism to release. In order to aid the release of the tape cartridge locking mechanism during the tape cartridge loading procedure, the supply reel motor is operated cyclically to cause the supply reel to vibrate. This vibration is held for a predetermined period of time. At the end of the vibration cycle, the tape drive attempts to pull the tape cartridge leader out of the tape cartridge. If the tape drive again detects that the tape cartridge locking mechanism is not released, it repeats the vibration sequence. The drive can execute a predetermined number of attempts to release the tape cartridge locking mechanism in this manner.

  • Patent number: 5331232
Abstract: A system and method for verifying the positional integrity of a robotic arm are disclosed. The robotic arm includes a servo mechanism which causes movement of the arm. The servo mechanism has a position encoder which indicates the relative position of the robotic arm with respect to a fixed reference point. A flag is attached to the robotic arm. A sensor for detecting the flag is attached to a point which is fixed with respect to the motion of the robotic arm. The sensor is located at a point such that the flag will pass by the sensor during the normal course of travel of the robotic arm. Each time the flag passes by the sensor, the sensor generates a signal. A controller which is coupled to the position encoder and to the sensor compares the position of the robotic device indicated by the position encoder at the time the sensor detects the presence of the flag with a predetermined value.
