  • Patent number: 5713534
Abstract: A web winding and severing apparatus using a linear carriage arrangement wherein the cores are positioned relative to feed to a winding drum in a bilateral manner such that a core is always adjacent to the drum ready to receive the leading edge of the web. A pair of reciprocating carriages are mounted on a frame which supports a winding drum for rotation. The carriages movement relative to the drum is independent, yet coordinated such that as one carriage carries a filling winding core, the other stands ready on the opposite side of the winding drum with an empty core. As the web is severed the second carriage positions its core to become the winding core and the first carriage moves away to off-load the full core, then, returns to a ready position with a fresh core.

  • Patent number: 5685616
Abstract: A ground engaging segment providing a running surface for wheels, endless tracks and the like, which is not pneumatic in nature, thereby not susceptible to puncture, and which is resiliently flexible to offer some resistance to shock. The ground engaging segment comprises a base and a number of removable, hollow, tubular ground engaging elements which extend transversely of the direction of travel of the running surface. Said ground engaging elements include an inner face for engagement to the base and an outer face for contact with the ground surface, and angular shaped side faces between the inner and outer faces allowing for resilient flexibility under normal load conditions. It is preferable that the ground engaging elements are open at their ends to allow for dissipation of heat and are arranged in circumferential rows, defining a chevron pattern, to prevent resultant side thrust imposed upon the running surface.

  • Patent number: 4895378
Abstract: A seal for preventing extremely hot gases from passing between a movable engine ramp and an engine splitter wall in a hypersonic aircraft. The seal moves with the engine ramp, in a direction parallel to the surface of the splitter wall. The seal includes a first flange which makes sliding contact with the outer engine ramp surface and is attached to a flexible sealing portion that fills the gap between the ramp and wall. The sealing portion maintains sliding contact with the wall as the gap changes dimension due to variations in the ramp's temperature. The attachment region can be a concave surface to radiate the seal's heat. In a second embodiment, the seal includes a second flange through which the seal is attached to the cooler side of the engine ramp.

  • Patent number: 4048046
Abstract: An electrolytic cell comprises two vertically extending, adjacent electrodes. The space between the electrodes is an electrolysis zone. The electrolysis zone has upper, middle and lower portions. The cell further comprises upper and lower plenum chambers above and below the upper and lower portions of the electrolysis zone, respectively. The cell has a channel which at least partially defines a passageway. The channel may be in an electrode, a cell wall, or in both. The passageway extends between the upper and lower plenum chambers but is inaccessible from the middle portion of the electrolysis zone. The cell may have a plurality of passageways. The improved design is particularly applicable to electrolytic processes in which gases are evolved at either or both of the electrodes, and in which the electrolytes and gaseous products are separated by a diaphragm or ion exchange membrane.

  • Patent number: 3980041
Abstract: An improved speed warning indicator for a speedometer comprises a transparent plate such as a transparent decal, having means such as an attached transparent plastic sheet bearing adhesive for attaching it to the transparent face cover of a speedometer casing containing a speedometer dial. The plate bears indicia, such as color and/or a plurality of spaced lines, etc. demarking the plate and the speedometer dial viewed through the plate, thereby indicating a speed warning on the dial while still permitting unobstructed viewing of all of the dial. Preferably, the plate is configured and dimensioned to overlie only a portion of the cover and dial so as to more clearly provide the speed warning. The plate can be affixed, in accordance with the present method, to the face cover of a fully assembled speedometer so as to provide very easily, simply and effectively, the improved speedometer of the invention.
