Abstract: A turbomachine comprises a housing (71) defining a bearing cavity (71) and a turbine chamber (77a) separated by a first wall. A heat shield (72) is disposed between the first wall and the turbine wheel (77), a heat shield cavity (78) being defined between the first wall and the heat shield (72). The shaft (81) extends through a passage (85) defined at least in part by a first aperture (86) in said wall and a second aperture (87) in the heat shield (72). A first seal (88) is provided between the shaft (81) and said first aperture (86). The housing defines a first gas channel (79) communicating with the heat shield cavity (78) for connection to a pressure source for raising pressure within the heat shield cavity (78). A second channel (92) is provided between the heat shield cavity (78) and said passage (85), the second channel opening to said passage (85) on the opposite side of said first seal (88) to said bearing assembly (82).

  • Patent number: 8331842
Abstract: Apparatus for selectively providing a surface finish to a receiver having an image side, comprising three rotatable members forming two nips. A finishing belt is entrained around, and movable with, one of the rotatable members, and passes through one of the nips. The receiver engages one of the nips according to what surface finish is desired. One of the rotatable members is selectively rotated to draw the receiver through the engaged nip, and a heater heats the rotatable member of the engaged nip facing the image side to impart the desired surface finish.

  • Patent number: 8331116
Abstract: A power converter in one aspect limits the magnetic flux in a transformer. A control circuit included in the power converter includes a pulse width modulator, a logic circuit and a saturation prevention circuit. The saturation prevention circuit asserts a first signal when a first integral value of the input voltage reaches a first threshold value and asserts a second signal after a delay time that begins when a difference between the first integral value and a second integral value of a reset voltage of the transformer falls to a second threshold value. The logic circuit turns off the switch when the first signal is asserted, and allows the switch to turn on and off in accordance with the pulse width modulator when the second signal is asserted.

  • Patent number: 8332789
Abstract: A method may include receiving an input from an optimization control that indicates a value along a scale, wherein the value is indicative of a design tradeoff between at least optimization for a first parameter of an electrical design and an optimization for a second parameter of the electrical design, wherein the value places an emphasis on the first parameter and an emphasis on the second parameter such that when the value on the scale is closer to the first parameter a larger emphasis is placed on the first parameter of the electrical design and when the value on the scale is closer to the second parameter a larger emphasis is placed on the second parameter of the electrical design. The method may further include choosing components for the electrical design based on the value indicated using the optimization control, the emphases affecting the components selected for the electrical design.

  • Patent number: 8327494
Abstract: A brush mitt includes a brush cover and a handle cover. A loop on the brush cover receives a handle of a brush of the type such as commonly used for washing vehicles. The handle cover wraps around the end of the handle and a brush cover attachment strap passes through the loop on the brush cover to secure the handle cover to the brush cover. The brush mitt prevents damage to delicate surfaces, such as the painted surface of vehicles, that might be caused by either the brush bristles or impact with the handle of the brush.

  • Patent number: 8332359
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and articles for creating a document revision history for a document imported into a first Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) from a second EDMS. Metadata and content from the second EDMS is “mirrored” within the first EDMS to create an artificial or mirrored revision history of a document within the first EDMS. Doing so allows users of the first EDMS to access any version of a document and its history, as though the document had always existed on the first EDMS. Content may be stored onto the first EDMS or a reference to the content may be stored instead. Rules may be developed to resolve conflicts between different document versions in the first and second EDMS.

  • Patent number: 8328412
Abstract: An impeller, a system for mixing a fluid, and a method of mixing a fluid in a tank are disclosed. For a sufficiently small impeller diameter and maximum blade tip velocity, the disclosed impeller, system, and method are capable of accelerating a near-zero intake velocity fluid, to generate a mixing zone that is collimated enough to have sufficient velocity vectors to suspend particles at a large distance away from the impeller, while minimizing the required power draw. An impeller may include a hub defining a longitudinal axis and plural blades spaced circumferentially about the hub. Each blade may include a root portion and a tip portion. Each blade may define a leading edge having an approximately circular raked helical geometry. A system for mixing a fluid may include a tank for containing the fluid, a drive shaft for extending into the tank, and the impeller.

  • Patent number: 8332536
Abstract: Provided is a method for the distribution and control of digital content such that Quality of Experience (QoE) is maintained. Content is protected from when the content is encrypted to when it is used. To ensure the QoE of particular content, a content owner embeds a list of required or preferred components that must be employed to render the content. The content owner's list of required or preferred components specifies specific components “trusted” to correctly process the content. The specified chain of preferred components is compared to possible devices in the system that processes the content. If there are multiple acceptable devices for a specific link, a preference system is employed to determine the device that executed the particular part of the chain. The preference system is based upon a number of factors, such as, but not limited to, performance characteristics, user preferences, expected stability, power requirements and system preferences.

  • Patent number: 8327689
Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring and determining fuel vapor recovery performance is disclosed. The dispensing of liquid fuel into a tank by a conventional gas pump nozzle naturally displaces a mixture of air and fuel ullage vapor in the tank. These displaced vapors may be recovered at the dispensing point nozzle by a vapor recovery system. A properly functioning vapor recovery system recovers approximately one unit volume of vapor for every unit volume of dispensed liquid fuel. The ratio of recovered vapor to dispensed fuel is termed the A/L ratio, which should ideally be approximately equal to one (1). The A/L ratio, and thus the proper functioning of the vapor recovery system, may be determined by measuring liquid fuel flow and return vapor flow (using a vapor flow sensor) on a nozzle-by-nozzle basis. The disclosed methods and apparatus provide for the determination of A/L ratios for individual nozzles using a reduced number of vapor flow sensors.
