  • Publication number: 20080060937
Abstract: An electrochemical cell includes a first electrode, a second electrode, a proton exchange membrane disposed between and in intimate contact with the electrodes, and a pressure pad disposed in electrical communication with the first electrode. The pressure pad is an electrically conductive sheet and is of a structure that is conformable to pressure variations within the cell. Methods of forming the pressure pad include disposing dimples or corrugations at the electrically conductive member. A method of maintaining compression within the cell includes disposing the electrically conductive member and the compression member at the first electrode, applying a load at the cell to compress the cell components, and maintaining electrical communication through the electrically conductive member.

  • Patent number: 7325257
Abstract: A plumbing fixture includes a receptacle for receiving waste, a tank for storing water, and an electrically operated pump that conveys water from the tank into the receptacle to flush the waste through a drain. The duration that the pump in operated to flush the waste is altered in response to variation of the electrical voltage supplied to the plumbing fixture. The pump is operated to decrease the amount of water in the tank when that amount is sensed to be excessive. Further operation of the pump is inhibited for a given interval to avoid overheating when the pump has been operating too frequently. The pump is cycled on and off in predefined patterns to indicate different malfunctions to a user.

  • Publication number: 20060199056
Abstract: In one embodiment, an electrochemical cell comprises: a membrane electrode assembly comprising a first active area and an opposingly positioned second active area, and a flow field support member disposed adjacent to said membrane electrode assembly. Each of the active areas comprises an electrode, and has a length to width ratio configured such that, during use of the electrochemical cell, a temperature differential measured across the shortest distance from a center of the active areas to an edge of the active areas is less than about 15° C. The flow field support member has a flow region that aligns with either the first active area or the second active area.

  • Patent number: 6048472
Abstract: Hydrocarbon feedstocks are converted into synthesis gas in a two-stage process comprising an initial steam reforming step followed by final conversion to synthesis gas in a mixed conducting membrane reactor. The steam reforming step converts a portion of the methane into synthesis gas and converts essentially all of the hydrocarbons heavier than methane into methane, hydrogen, and carbon oxides. The steam reforming step produces an intermediate feed stream containing methane, hydrogen, carbon oxides, and steam which can be processed without operating problems in a mixed conducting membrane reactor. The steam reforming and mixed conducting membrane reactors can be heat-integrated for maximum operating efficiency and produce synthesis gas with compositions suitable for a variety of final products.
