The spool is freely rotatable in a first direction to release fishing line from the bottom portion of the spool, and is mechanically rotatable in a second direction opposite to the first direction to retrieve the fishing line and to wind the line back onto the spool. A handle crank is provided for imparting rotation to the spool in the second direction by rotation of the crank in the same, second direction.

A freewheeling flywheel is mounted coaxially in front of the spool to engage line during discharge. The freely spinning flywheel provides a feel for direction and distance of the cast, but is of sufficiently small inertia so as not to impair line discharge. The flywheel may be controlled or feathered by tactile contact with a control button coaxially mounted on a common axle with the flywheel, for rotation therewith.
