  • Patent number: 8756815
Abstract: Monolithic metal bodies (e.g., hard aluminum alloys) comprising a continuous microcavity contained within the body are disclosed. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the metal body to the cross-sectional area of the microcavity may be not greater than 10. The produced metal bodies may be used in structural applications (e.g., aerospace vehicles) to monitor or test the integrity of the metal body.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 11, 2012
Date of Patent: June 24, 2014
    Assignee: Alcoa Inc.
Inventors: Hasso Weiland, Markus Heinimann, Robert C. Pahl, Achim Hofmann, John Liu

  • Patent number: 6918975
Abstract: A substantially unrecrystallized extrusion comprising about 3.6 to about 4.2 wt. % copper, about 1.0 to about 1.6 wt. % magnesium, about 0.3 to about 0.8 wt. % manganese, about 0.05 to 0.25% zirconium, the balance substantially aluminum, incidental elements and impurities. The extrusion has a longitudinal yield strength of at least about 50 ksi and a longitudinal tensile ultimate strength of at least about 70 ksi. On a preferred basis, the extrusions of this invention include very low levels of both iron and silicon, typically on the order of less than 0.1 wt. % each, and more preferably about 0.05 wt. % or less iron and about 0.03 wt. % or less silicon.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 29, 2001
Date of Patent: July 19, 2005

  • Patent number: 5626050
Abstract: A method of making stock for fabricating a hollow metal ball bat, the stock having a barrel section, a handle section and a tapered section connecting the barrel section and handle section. The barrel section has a first inner and outer diameter. The handle section has a second outer and inner diameter. The second outer and inner diameters are smaller than the first outer and inner diameters. The tapered section has a variable inner and outer diameter along its length and a substantially uniform wall thickness.
