  • Patent number: 11959432
Abstract: A method of operating an engine is provided. An exhaust valve actuation fault is detected for a first exhaust valve associated with a first cylinder during a first working cycle. In response to the detection of the exhaust valve actuation fault, fueling to at least the first cylinder is cut off. Actuation of the first exhaust valve is attempted in second working cycles that follow the first working cycle, wherein the second working cycles are not fueled. Whether or not the first exhaust valve actuated properly during the second working cycles is determined. Operation of the first cylinder is resumed when it is determined that the first exhaust valve actuated properly. Operation of the first cylinder is not resumed when it is determined that the first exhaust valve did not actuate properly.

  • Publication number: 20230392561
Abstract: A system and method for operating an ICE by (a) generating a running history of one or more-cylinder events per cylinder, and (b) using the running history to select a least-used non-rotating firing pattern, among a plurality of non-rotating firing patterns, provided for each firing fraction less than one (1). By making the least used selection based on the running history, unequal usage among cylinders of the ICE can be mitigated.

  • Patent number: 10167799
Abstract: Methods and arrangements for transitioning an engine between a deceleration cylinder cutoff (DCCO) state and an operational state are described. In one aspect, transitions from DCCO begin with reactivating cylinders to pump air to reduce the pressure in the intake manifold prior to firing any cylinders. In another aspect, transitions from DCCO, involve the use of an air pumping skip fire operational mode. After the manifold pressure has been reduced, the engine may transition to either a cylinder deactivation skip fire operational mode or other appropriate operational mode. In yet another aspect a method of transitioning into DCCO using a skip fire approach is described. In this aspect, the fraction of the working cycles that are fired is gradually reduced to a threshold firing fraction. All of the working chambers are then deactivated after reaching the threshold firing fraction.

  • Patent number: 9858326
Abstract: Methods and data structures are provided for allowing data mining with improved efficiency. During processing of a usage log (or multiple logs) for an activity, such as a usage logfile of network search activity, a common fact table is generated. The common fact table allows a plurality of auxiliary data structures to be formed from the common fact table. These auxiliary data structures are designed to allow users to submit queries against the contents of the data structure in order to investigate the data. The efficiency of access of the common fact table is improved by allowing users to access auxiliary data structures other than the auxiliary data structures that are associated with a user. Optionally, the common fact table and/or the auxiliary data structures can include dimension values that correspond to both pre-identified dimension values as well as dimension values that are identified during processing of the activity logfiles.

  • Publication number: 20160350401
Abstract: The ranking quality of a ranked list may be evaluated. In an example embodiment, a method is implemented by a system to access log data, ascertain which entries of a ranked list are skipped, and determine a ranking quality metric from the skipped entries. More specifically, log data that reflects user interactions with a ranked list having multiple entries is accessed. The user interactions include at least indications of which of the multiple entries are selected entries. It is ascertained which entries of the multiple entries of the ranked list are skipped entries based on the selected entries. The ranking quality metric for the ranked list is determined responsive to the skipped entries.

  • Patent number: 8617221
Abstract: Apparatus and methods to facilitate fixation of a fracture are disclosed. These apparatus include a bone plate for the fixation of a fractured bone having a plurality of fastener openings so that the bone plate may be secured by a plurality of fasteners across a reduced fracture to fixate a reduced fracture. The bone plate is configured to flex in situ to conform to the surface of the bone while providing sufficient stiffness in the plane of the device to resist forces and moments in the plane. Methods of use of the present invention include fastening the bone plate to a first side of the fracture, flexing portions of the bone plate to bias against the bone surface on the second side of the fracture, fastening the portions of the bone plate so biased to the second side of the fracture, thereby fixating the fracture by fastening the bone plate to the second side of the fracture.

  • Patent number: 6567486
Abstract: A phase-modulated signal such as a quadrature phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) signal in a wireless communication system is demodulated by frequency demodulating the phase-modulated signal. The phase-modulated signal is separated into first and second copies, the first copy is phase demodulated to generate demodulated symbols, and the second copy is frequency demodulated to generate, e.g., a measure of the instantaneous frequency of the phase-modulated signal. The instantaneous frequency measure is processed to identify one or more symbol transitions, and the identified transitions are used to generate event signals having signature properties (signature events). These signature events are used in traditional Time Difference of Arrival tdoa algorithms to accurately determine position of a mobile unit in the wireless communication system.

  • Patent number: 6194977
Abstract: Dibits (i.e., pairs of bits) in an input data stream are converted into a modulation signal (e.g., a &pgr;/4-DQPSK modulation signal) using a technique that relies on pre-computed filter output values to reduce the processing required to generate each sample in the modulation signal. The pre-computed filter output values are stored in one or more look-up tables, which are accessed in real time during signal conversion to retrieve values as needed. In one implementation, the dibits, which are represented by complex values in a complex symbol space, are converted into two streams of state variables: one stream for the even symbols and one stream for the odd symbols. In addition, a third stream of state variables identifies whether each of the corresponding symbols is an even symbol or an odd symbol. The three streams of state variables are used to generate address pointers that are used to access the pre-computed filter output values from the look-up tables.
