  • Patent number: 5666592
Abstract: A fuser includes both a fusing roller and a fusing belt, each separately engageable with a pressure member forming first and second nips for applying a finish to a toner image. The first nip between the fuser roller and the pressure member can provide a matte or textured finish to a print while the second nip between the belt and the pressure member provides a high gloss finish. The fusing roller engages the pressure member through an opening in the belt when the belt is stopped with the opening properly positioned. The fuser roller backs the belt when the belt is being used for fusing or finishing.

  • Patent number: 5489761
Abstract: Heatset of a fusing roller in a fuser in which the rollers are not separated during standby is prevented by periodically rotating the rollers. To prevent a temperature surge caused by elimination of heat-absorbing sheets between the rollers during standby, the rollers are rotated at a reduced speed for a short time at the beginning of the standby period after a run. To also prevent temperature fluctuations due to the periodic rotation during standby, that rotation is controlled to a small amount to prevent the sensor from contacting an entirely new portion of the fusing roller surface with each periodic rotation.

  • Patent number: 5141333
Abstract: A device for monitoring the temperature of a moving surface, particularly the outside surface of a heated roller in a toner fusing apparatus, includes a roller which rolls on the surface as it moves. The roller is virtualy entirely made up of two thermocouple materials. Because the materials themselves directly engage the surface being monitored, the device has a fast response to temperature change of the surface.

  • Patent number: 5055884
Abstract: An electrostatographic reproduction equipment such as a copier or printer including a multiplex fusing apparatus that has non-contact and cooperating contact fusing components. The fusing apparatus further includes controls for selectively operating it in a non-contact mode, or in a contact mode.

  • Patent number: 5053828
Abstract: An electrostatographic copier or printer includes front end apparatus for forming and developing copies of images electrostatically, and back end apparatus which include a multiple function fusing roller that also functions as an image transfer roller. The multi-function fusing apparatus selectively includes a contact fusing operation or a non-contact fusing operation. A vacuum roller holds the copy sheet while either a radiant fuser or a pressure nip fuser will fix a toner image onto the substrate. The vacuum roller may be internally heated and the pressure roller which creates the fusing nip is selectively moved into and out of contact with the vacuum roller dependent upon the operation selected.

  • Patent number: 5019692
Abstract: A thermostatic device particularly usable in sensing the surface tempoerature of a rotatable member in a fuser includes a rotatable roller mountable in rolling engagement with a moving surface. A heat sensor located inside the roller senses temperature variations in the roller. For example, a pin that is spring-urged against the inside surface of the roller, moves a switch between open and closed conditions as the inside diameter of the roller varies with a change in its temperature. Alternatively, a bimetallic disc positioned in engagement with the inside surface of the roller is sensed to open or close a switch in response to the roller temperature reaching a given threshold.
