  • Patent number: 6123997
Abstract: A thermal barrier coating system and a method for forming the coating system which yields a thermal barrier coating having good adhesion to a bond coat overlying a metal superalloy substrate. The adhesion of the bond coat and the thermal barrier coating is enhanced by forming a mature .alpha.-alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) scale at the bond coat-TBC interface. The desired mature .alpha.-alumina scale can be obtained by utilizing one or more of the following steps: preoxidation of the bond coat at certain minimum temperatures and durations; inoculation of the surface of the bond coat; surface doping or alloying of the bond coat surface; and the addition of noble metals to the bond coat. Each of these steps promotes the formation of .alpha.-alumina and avoids the formation of the .gamma., .delta. and .theta.-alumina phases which undergo phase transformations at elevated temperatures, with the result that a more spallation-resistant thermal barrier coating system is obtained.

  • Patent number: 5780110
Abstract: A method for manufacturing an article for use in a gas tubine engine is disclosed, which comprises applying a metallic bond coating on a superalloy substrate; surface doping a surface of the bond coating with at least one element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Cr and Y by plating, ion implantation, MOCVD and sputttering; and then applying an insulative ceramic coating on the bond coating.

  • Patent number: 5516380
Abstract: A NiAl intermetallic alloy and article is provided with improved high temperature strength, particularly stress rupture strength, through the generation of a multiphase microstructure comprising a beta matrix and at least one precipitate phase. The strength properties and microstructure are the result of alloying with at least two elements selected from Ga, Hf, and optionally Ti, Zr, Ta, Nb, and V, in defined ranges. Preferred are at least two of the elements Ga, Hf, and Ti, and specifically preferred are all three. A specifically preferred form of the invention, in atomic percent, is about 45-59% Ni, about 0.02-0.5% Ga, about 0.2 to less than 1% Hf, about 0.1-10% Ti, with the balance A1 and incidental impurities.

  • Patent number: 5215831
Abstract: A beta phase nickel aluminide microalloyed with iron having improved ductility. Nickel aluminide intermetallics alloyed with no more than about 0.5 atomic percent iron have significantly improved room temperature ductility over conventional unalloyed beta phase nickel aluminides or beta phase nickel aluminides alloyed with higher percentages of iron.

  • Patent number: 4539801
Abstract: Resilient attachments are mounted on a feed auger of the type having a central drum mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis, spiral flights mounted on longitudinal ends of the drum, and a central drum portion having a plurality of radially extending feed fingers. Each resilient attachment is mounted on and extends radially from the central drum portion about one of the fingers. During operation of the auger, the attachment prevents the accumulation of vegetation on the auger, improves feeding of the vegetation to the combine throat and protects the auger from damage.

  • Patent number: 4453375
Abstract: An attachment is provided for a feed auger of the type having a cylindrical drum mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis, spiral flights mounted on opposite longitudinal ends of the drum, and a central drum portion having a plurality of radially extending feed fingers. The attachment is resilient and is mounted on and extends radially from the central drum portion about the fingers. During operation of the auger, the attachment prevents the accumulation of vegetation on the auger, improves the feeding of the vegetation to the combine throat and protects the auger from damage.
