Patent number: 9320549Abstract: Spinal fixation plates for maintaining adjacent vertebrae in and fixed position are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, the plate includes opposed superior and inferior portions that are angled in a direction anterior to an anterior face of a mid-portion of the plate. The plate also includes a curvature formed therein about a longitudinal axis in a sagittal plane thereof. In use, when the plate is attached to adjacent vertebrae, the angle of the superior and inferior portions and the curvature in the plate are effective to position one or more thru-bores formed in the superior and inferior portions at the anterior rims of the adjacent vertebrae. In another embodiment, a spinal fixation plate is provided that is adapted to engage and mate to a fusion cage or other vertebral implant disposed between adjacent vertebra. The present invention also provides spinal fixation kits or assemblies, and methods for implanting the same.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2015Date of Patent: April 26, 2016Assignee: DePuy Synthes Products, Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Patent number: 6755841Abstract: An installation tool that is useful for the efficient and effective placement of an article, such as an artificial disc, between adjacent vertebral bodies is provided. The installation tool can be provided as a kit having modular components which allow the surgeon to select from among a variety of components to assemble an installation tool that is optimized for its intended use. The installation tool of the invention generally includes a pair of opposed levers, each of which has a proximal handle portion and a distal portion. A fulcrum is disposed between the two levers to enable proper operation of the tool. The tool further includes a pusher block that is positioned between the two levers and is selectively movable between an initial location distal of the fulcrum and a final location adjacent the distal end of the levers. The pusher block includes a proximal end, a distal end, and a bore extending at least partially therethrough.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2001Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: DePuy Acromed, Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Fraser, Alexander Grinberg, Daniel Malone, Bradley Moore, Michael J. O'Neil, Mark Boomer

Patent number: 6592624Abstract: An implantable prosthetic element includes a first end plate and a second end plate, each of which has a bone-facing surface and an opposed mating surface. The bone-facing surfaces of the first end plate and the second end plate each have at least one lobe protruding therefrom. Some or all of the lobes may have a plurality of wedge-like like fins which protrude therefrom. An elastomeric core is interposed between, and attached to, the mating surfaces of the first end plate and the second end plate.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2000Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: DePuy AcroMed, Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Patent number: 6478800Abstract: A tool for installing an object, such as an artificial disk prosthesis, between adjacent vertebrae includes a pair of opposed levers separated by a fulcrum. Blade tips are disposed at the distal end of the levers. A pusher block is disposed distally of the fulcrum, and upon actuation by forward movement of a pusher rod, the pusher block moves the artificial disk prosthesis distally. The blade tips may be inserted between adjacent vertebral bodies as the disk moves forward thus causing the vertebral bodies to be separated until the disk is disposed therebetween. In one embodiment, the length of the blade tips may be selectively adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2000Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: DePuy AcroMed, Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Fraser, Michael J. O'Neil, Mark Boomer

Patent number: 6464634Abstract: A surgical retractor system comprises a support frame and at least one retractor blade. The support frame has a generally horizontally oriented support member comprising a plurality of holes. The surgical retractor has at least one retractor blade which is mateable at a selected position on the support frame. At least one retractor blade of the surgical retractor system has an open access window which provides greater visual and physical access to the surgical field.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2000Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Depuy Acromed, Inc.Inventor: Robert D. Patent number: 5338617Abstract: A method for insulating metal powder particles comprises steps of placing the metal powder particles in a mixing container and adding a monomer in solution to the metal powder particles to form a mixture. The mixture is then stirred to provide an even consistency and is baked to remove solvents. The mixture is then stirred and the monomer is polymerized by exposing the monomer coated carbonyl iron particles to moist gas. The mixture is then ground to form a powder. The powder is suitable for incorporation into plastic resins for subsequent casting to form radio frequency shields having high DC resistance.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1992Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: David M.
