    Abstract: This invention relates to oil soluble additives particularly useful in lubricating oil compositions, and to concentrates or lubricating compositions containing these additives. The additives are various metal salts of mono- or dicarboxylic acids, anhydrides, esters, etc., which have been substituted with a high molecular weight hydrocarbon group, and derivatives thereof. The high molecular weight hydrocarbon group has a number average-molecular weight (M.sub.n) of greater than about 900. The metal salt additives are especially useful in combination with certain grafted ethylene-olefin copolymers or copolymers of 4-vinyl pyridine and esters of aliphatic mono-, di- or polycarboxylic acids as viscosifying agents.

    Abstract: The instant invention relates to a process for controlling the viscosity of organic liquids by incorporating in said liquid a minor amount of polymer complex, and optionally a cosolvent for the ionic groups of said polymer. The polymer complex comprises the reaction product of a metal neutralized sulfonated polymer and a basic nitrogen-containing polymer, wherein the polymer complex is substantially soluble in said organic liquid, and pendant sulfonate groups which are substantially insoluble in said organic liquid. The optional cosolvent is selected which will solubilize the pendant sulfonate groups and provide a reasonably homogeneous mixture of solvent, cosolvent and polymer complex. The preferred compositions prepared by the method of the instant invention comprise an organic liquid having a solubility parameter of from 6 to 10.5 in combination with a polymer complex containing from 0.2 up to 10.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a family of novel and efficient drag reduction agents for a variety of organic solutions which comprise a family of polymeric complexes (i.e., polyampholytes) which are terpolymers of styrene/metal styrene sulfonate/n-vinylpyridine (NVP).The metal styrene sulfonate is an anionic monomer, while n-vinylpyridine is a base which becomes chemically coordinated to the metal ion. These styrene-based polyampholytes have approximately 1 to about 50 mole percent of the NVP moiety present within the macromolecular structure. These groups are not necessarily present in an equimolar charge ratio. The excess NVP allows for facile dispensability or solubility of the polyampholytes into the organic liquid.

    Abstract: A new family of terpolymers based on V-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone/sodium styrene sulfonate/methacrylamidopropyltrimethylammonium chloride has been found to be an improved viscosity control additive for water-based drilling muds. The resultant muds display good viscosity characteristics, thermal stability and gel strength when formulated from the terpolymer intramolecular complex having the appropriate polymer concentration and salt level.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to improved viscosification agents for a variety of aqueous solutions which comprise a family of intramolecular polymeric complexes (i.e., polyampholytes) which are copolymers of metal styrene sulfonate/methacrylamidoproplytrimethylammonium chloride (MAPTAC). The metal styrene sulfonate is an anionic monomer, while MAPTAC is cationically charged. These polyampholytes have approximately 1 to about 99 mole % of the anionic monomer and approximately 1 to about 99 mole % of the cationic moiety present within the macromolecular structure. These groups are not necessarily present in an equimolar charge ratio. The excess undissociated charge allows for facile dispensability or solubility of the polyampholytes into low ionic strength aqueous solutions.
