  • Patent number: 6695950
Abstract: Paper comprising aldehyde modified cellulose pulp having selected aldehyde content. Another embodiment involves a method of preparing celullose aldehydes using selective oxidation with a limited amount of oxidant and a nitroxyl radical mediator and defined reaction conditions to provide oxidized cellulose material with effective aldehyde content making it particularly suitable for use in making paper with desirable wet strength, temporary wet strength and dry strength properties, including compressive strength and resistance.

  • Patent number: 6368456
Abstract: This invention relates to paper comprising aldehyde modified cellulose pulp prepared using nitroxyl radical mediated oxidation and further containing selected additives comprising aldehyde functional polymers or polymers containing functionality capable of reacting with aldehyde groups and having improved strength properties. This invention further relates to paper made from aldehyde modified cellulose pulp where an hydroxyl group containing polymer is added to the paper to provide wet strength properties.

  • Patent number: 4849546
Abstract: A multi-step process for the preparation of ethynylbenzaldehydes from bromo- or iodobenzaldehydes is disclosed. The arylhalogen is replaced with a protected ethynyl compound which is subsequently cleaved by base to form the arylacetylene. The aldehydic functionlity is preserved by formation of a corresponding Schiff's base or acetal, and its subsequent regeneration by treatment with aqueous acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 9, 1988
Date of Patent: July 18, 1989
Assignee: National Starch and Chemical Corporation

  • Patent number: 4730032
Abstract: Novel mono- or difunctional phenylacetylene-substituted Schiff's base monomers useful in the preparation of electrically conducting polymers is disclosed. On heating, these monomers melt to a viscous liquid state, and on continued heating above about 300.degree. C. polymerize to form an electrically insulating thermoset polymer. On further post-cure heat treatment, the polymer becomes electroconductive showing a bulk conductivity of at least 10.sup.-2 S/cm.

  • Patent number: 4510324
Abstract: The invention provides disulfonimide compounds of the general formula ##STR1## wherein X is bromine, chlorine or iodine; R is hydrogen or methyl; and R' is alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl. The compounds are useful as activators for anaerobic adhesive compositions and also as intermediates in the preparation of monomers of the general formula ##STR2## wherein R and R' are as defined above. The monomers are polymerizable to form homo- and copolymers useful in the photographic industry as well as in formulating anaerobic adhesive compositions.
