    Abstract: The present invention provides a distributed computing system and method for efficiently utilizing system resources with a variable width queue to handle resource contention. The present invention varies the width of the queue of active tasks such that as a resource becomes idle, a new tasks is added to the queue thereby incrementing the width of the queue and fully utilizing system resources.
