Patent number: 9287706Abstract: A method and implementing computer system are provided in which a smart power strip is controlled by a master device which is also plugged-into the power strip. In an exemplary implementation, a computer or PC operates as a master device and a direct line of communication from the computer allows the OS to make a decision based on settings whether or not to power on or off individual power outlets on the power strip used in common by the computer and various peripheral devices. Thus, only selected peripheral devices are powered-on along with the computer when the computer or other master device is powered-on at a common power strip.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2013Date of Patent: March 15, 2016Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Derek Ryan Brewer, Kerry Michael Langford, Robert Dale Wilhelm

Patent number: 9009587Abstract: A browser locking tool for an information handling system (IHS) may prevent data loss on a webpage. The browser locking tool may prevent navigation away from the webpage by both browser level navigation controls and webpage level navigation controls. Alternatively, the browser locking tool may allow navigation away from the webpage when the navigation should not cause data loss.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2012Date of Patent: April 14, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert Dale Wilhelm, Derek Ryan Brewer, Michael Bockus

Patent number: 8804157Abstract: A method, programmed medium and system are disclosed which provide for an in-line scanner used to dynamically scan a document or image, real-time as it is being printed within a printer unit and before the printed document exits the printer. The scanned image is compared to a stored electronically-generated image of the file being printed. When the comparison is determinative that there is a printing problem, the printing operation may be stopped quickly before the partially printed document or image has exited the printer. An error message may then be displayed, and the user is enabled to take appropriate action. A resume function enables a user to resume a print job at exactly the place where it had left off before detecting a print problem. In another embodiment, when the system detects a problem with a print job, the entire print job of the remainder of the print job is sent from the faulting printer to another printer where either the remainder of the print job or the entire print job is completed.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2011Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Gordon Bockus, Jr., Michael Andrew Bockus, Derek Ryan Brewer, Robert Dale Wilhelm

Patent number: 8271054Abstract: A method, programmed medium and system are disclosed which provide for user-controlled management of power requirements for mobile devices. The system enables the user to determine and adjust power settings according to time-related goals set by the end user. The end user, in one example, may specify a goal in hours, minutes or a predetermined date/time and the power management function displays, for example, various combinations of power-down options on specific system devices which can be implemented to achieve power availability for the specified amount of time. The user is enabled to select which of the displayed combination power-down option schemes to implement in order to best suit the user's application requirements during the time frame in which the power-saving scheme will be implemented in order to maximize power-saving while still providing optimum functionality for the user's particular application.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2010Date of Patent: September 18, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Michael Andrew Bockus, Derek Ryan Brewer, Robert Dale Wilhelm
