  • Publication number: 20090042951
Abstract: This invention provides methods and compositions, most preferably pharmaceutical compositions, for treating salt-sensitive hypertension through the inhibition of certain enzymes in the beta-adrenergic pathway that are involved in the regulation of the secretion of water and sodium. These enzymes are cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDE) that selectively hydrolyze the second messenger cAMP and, therefore, down-regulate beta-adrenergic signaling. Specifically provided are methods and pharmaceutical compositions for treating salt-sensitive hypertension by inhibiting certain members of the PDE4 family of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases, particularly members of the PDE4B and PDE4D sub-families and, more particularly, the PDE4B1 and PDE4D5 isotypes thereof.

  • Patent number: 7481445
Abstract: The present invention is a combination walker and wheelchair which enables a person with back problems and other physical disabilities to walk from one location to another without assistance from a third person with correct walking posture and arm movement, thereby allowing long walks versus crutches of current design and also enables the person to comfortably sit in the chair in spite of the person's back pains. The ergonomically friendly design includes a high level transverse bar which enables the invention to be pushed by a person's hands, arms and chest or enables the person to lean against the invention; a foldable main structural frame; a detachable back support and seat; and rotatable wide armrests made with compressive materials thereby allowing the chair structure the maximum width to get through standard doors and still have even wider comfortable armrests. Therefore, the present invention can be used as a walker, a wheelchair, a transportation chair, a golf trolley, and a spectator chair.

  • Publication number: 20080026409
Abstract: Identification of compositions of biomarkers which diagnose and distinguish between salt-sensitive hypertension, salt-resistant hypertension, salt-independent hypertension and/or hypertensive disorders comprise identifying varying levels of biomarkers in each patient as compared to normal patients. Methods for the identification of novel biomarkers and determination of minimal maximally effective doses of pharmaceutical agents used in treating patients are provided.

  • Patent number: 5762885
Abstract: An apparatus for regenerating a catalyst absorber after contact with a combustion exhaust which consist of a pair of cooperating louvered doors one on each side of a bed of catalyst absorber, there being at least two beds such that closing a cooperating pair of louvers, isolates the bed contained between the louvers from the exhaust gases while the other bed is left with the louvers open to continue treating the exhaust gas. Between each pair of louvers and associated with the catalyst absorber bed between the respective pair of louvers, there are positioned a regeneration inlet nozzle and a used regeneration gas outlet. By selectively closing various pairs of the louvers, a portion of the bed can be regenerated while the remainder of the bed continues to treat the exhaust gases. In this way an equivalent amount of active or regenerated catalyst absorber is in contact with the combustion exhaust gases to maintain a specified outlet pollution concentration limit.

  • Patent number: 5665321
Abstract: A method of decreasing the level of NOx, CO and SO.sub.2 emissions in a gas turbine is disclosed. A catalyst absorber, preferably made of alumina/platinum/carbonate salt, is used to oxidize the pollutant oxides and absorb them. The catalyst absorber can then be regenerated and reused. An apparatus for treating the stack gases, and a method of making the catalyst absorber are also described.

  • Patent number: 5650127
Abstract: A method of decreasing the level of NOx and CO emissions in a gas turbine is disclosed. The method includes the steps of oxidizing NO and CO in the gas stream to corresponding NO.sub.2 and CO.sub.2, and then absorbing the nitrogen oxide pollutants on an absorption bed. The method can achieve levels of 0 to 2 ppm CO and 0.35 to 1.5 ppm NO in the resultant stream.
