Abstract: Apparatus for accumulating successive stacks of superimposed sheets on discrete pallets employs a conveyor which delivers a continuous imbricated stream of sheets to a stacking station where a pallet descends with an elevator and gathers a first stack. A separating finger is inserted into the accumulation of sheets at the stacking station at a level above the topmost sheet of the fully grown first stack.

Abstract: Expired paper rolls are removed from one unwinding station in a paper processing plant by engaging them with a gripper and transferring them onto a conveyor which can be operated to move expired rolls axially. Each expired roll is rotated about its own axis before the conveyor is set in motion so that the projecting remnant of web is convoluted around the expired roll before the latter begins to move axially. The one unwinding station is adjacent a second unwinding station which receives a fresh roll from a conveyance while the preceding roll is caused to pay out its web at the one station. The supporting arms for the roll at the one station are pivotable between the two stations so that a partly expired fresh roll can be shifted from the second station to the one station prior to conversion of such roll into an expired roll.

Abstract: Two conveyors for stacks of paper sheets are coupled to each other for movement back and forth between a first position in which one of the conveyors receives one or more stacks and the other conveyor is relieved of the stack or stacks thereon, and a second position in which the one conveyor is relieved of the stack or stacks thereon and the other conveyor receives one or more stacks. In order to expel air from the stacks on the conveyors the foremost portions of the stacks are clamped by reciprocable rams to the respective conveyors and the thus clamped stacks are caused to move along stationary squeegees which bear against successive increments of the stacks behind the respective rams while the stacks, the respective rams and the respective conveyors move away from the stack-receiving positions.

Abstract: Apparatus for transporting paper stacks has two spaced-apart transporting units each having a supplying conveyor which can accept stacks from a maker or feeder, an intermediate conveyor which can accept stacks from the supplying conveyor, and a receiving conveyor which can accept stacks from the intermediate conveyor for delivery to a packing machine. A third receiving conveyor is disposed between the receiving conveyors of the two transporting units and serves to deliver stacks to a third packing machine. The intermediate conveyors can be linked to each other for simultaneous movement transversely of the transporting units so that one of the intermediate conveyors registers with the third receiving conveyor while the other intermediate conveyor receives one or more stacks from the supplying conveyor of the corresponding transporting unit.

Abstract: Apparatus for supporting the core of a reel of convoluted paper in a winding machine has two trunnions which extend into the end portions of the core from opposite ends of the reel and are surrounded by ring-shaped stops which are normally closely adjacent to the respective end faces of the reel therebetween. The trunnions and the respective stops are movable axially toward and away from the core and each trunnion is surrounded by a ring-shaped sensor which is biased against the respective end face of the reel so that the distance between the sensor and the corresponding stop denotes the width of the gap between the respective end face of the reel and the corresponding stop.
