  • Publication number: 20070169333
Abstract: A brain implant system consistent with embodiments of the present invention includes an electrode array having a plurality of electrodes for sensing neuron signals. A method for manufacturing the electrode array includes machining a piece of an electrically conductive substance to create a plurality of electrodes extending from a base member. Each electrode also has a corresponding base section. A nonconductive layer is provided around at least a portion of the base section of each electrode to support the plurality of electrodes. The base section of the electrodes are then cut to separate the base member from the plurality of electrodes supported by the nonconductive support layer. The present invention also includes a complete brain implant system using the above electrode array.

  • Publication number: 20060253120
Abstract: An apparatus is provided to hold and orient an implant during a medical procedure and includes an elongated member having an upper member and a lower member with a formed end. A biasing member is operatively positioned between the upper member and lower member and supplies a biasing force to the lower member. A ball joint is provided that includes a ball, and the ball joint accepts the formed end of the lower member. A biasing force is provided by the biasing member to cause the formed end of the lower member to contact the ball. A translation mechanism is used to move the upper member in a first linear direction toward the lower member to cause the formed end of the lower member to lock the ball of the ball joint and, thus, lock the ball joint and orient the ball of the ball joint in a desired position.

  • Publication number: 20040106894
Abstract: A drug injector includes a chamber for holding a drug to be injected into a biological body, and an nozzle through which the drug is injected. A piston is positioned in the chamber, and an actuator is coupled to the piston. The actuator includes a member that contracts when heated. In some embodiments, heating of the member is induced by applying a potential to the member. The actuator moves the piston towards the nozzle when the member is heated to expel the drug out of the chamber through the nozzle. The drug injector can include a sensor for measuring properties, such as stiffness, of the outer layer of the body. Further, the drug injector can adjust the piston movement based on the sensed properties. Alternatively, the sensor can be used with other medical devices, such as microneedle transport devices.
