  • Patent number: 6074779
Abstract: Described is a battery cell housing comprising a battery cell compartment and a latching compartment separated by an inner wall, where the battery housing is made of metal formed by combination extrusion or dual impact extrusion. This permits battery compartment wall to be thin, so that the maximum size battery cell may be inserted into it, and the latching compartment wall to be thic,k so it can be securely fastened to an electronic device. The inner wall provides an impenetrable barrier to moisture migrating from the latching compartment to the battery compartment.

  • Patent number: 6050261
Abstract: A backframe for a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is formed of a molded shell having some depth, and a closure plate fixed to the shell to provide an enclosed volume. The molded shell with the closure plate yields a good weight-to-strength ratio, and provides a water- and dust-resistant enclosure for control components of the SCBA. A water-tight battery compartment is enclosed within the shell so the batteries are separated from other components. A low air pressure alarm provides an auditory signal, and may also include a tactile signal. A buddy breathing hose can be pulled from the backframe to provide a reasonable length tether; and, by connecting two such buddy breathing hoses, twice the length is provided.

  • Patent number: 6032664
Abstract: A self contained breathing apparatus has a display of air pressure within the face mask in the field of vision of the user of the breathing apparatus. The display is four lights that indicate the four quarter-tanks of pressure, and the lights change to indicate the amount of air remaining. A transducer receives tank pressure and provides an electric signal. The air pressure is placed on a bourdon tube which rotates a disk in response to changes in pressure. One half of the disk includes a gradient, and a light source emits light through the gradient to be received by a light sensor. As the disk rotates, the gradient varies the amount of light received by the sensor, so the electrical output of the sensor varies.

  • Patent number: 5640148
Abstract: A holder for a personal alert safety system (PASS) has a bracket to receive the PASS, and a housing connected to the bracket. An additional activation switch is installed in the PASS, the additional switch being magnetically operable. The housing is connected to the air line of a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). A piston or diaphragm is urged in one direction by air pressure, and is urged in the opposite direction by a spring in the absence of air under pressure. When the piston is moved in the one direction, a magnet is disposed adjacent to the additional switch, and when the piston is moved in the opposite direction by the spring, the magnet is removed from adjacent to the additional switch so the PASS is automatically activated by the presence of air pressure in an activated SCBA. The PASS can be used without the SCBA and can be activated manually as is conventional, either attached to or removed from the SCBA.

  • Patent number: 5404577
Abstract: A generally hands-free, voice communication system in combination with a head-protective helmet. The helmet protects the wearer's head and the communications system permits voice communications between journeyman personnel, e.g. firefighters, police, military, industrial, hazardous material handling personnel, in relatively close proximity with each other and between journeymen and a group leader; and the group leader's communication system to also permit relatively long-range communication between the group leader and a relatively distant communications center such as a fire engine or distant fire company, base station or repeater.

  • Patent number: 5375972
Abstract: A turbine stator vane structure is described which comprises an airfoil having a pressure side and a suction side and at least one duct of preselected size defined through the airfoil from the pressure side to the suction side thereof with preselected orientation with respect to the camberline of the airfoil for directing a predetermined portion of the turbine engine gas flow through the airfoil whereby the gas flow angle and momentum at the rotor inlet plane of the engine is selectively altered. A rotatable slotted sleeve may be included within each duct for selectively throttling flow therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5200736
Abstract: An assembly is disposed on a helmet for monitoring predetermined thresholds of ambient thermal condition of the helmet. Such assembly includes at least one thermistor for sensing the status of an ambient thermal condition and a signal comparator for detecting each predetermined threshold. Individual LED's visually indicate when each predetermined threshold is reached, while an audible alarm indicates when a hazardous predetermined threshold is reached. The audible alarm is further utilized to indicate if the battery voltage is under a predetermined threshold which is predicated on the breakdown voltage of a reference diode when a test switch is closed. A temperature responsive switch is also included to conserve the life of the battery by activating and deactivating the assembly about a predetermined temperature level.

  • Patent number: 5097826
Abstract: There is disclosed a pressure monitoring device for self-containing breathing apparatus including visual indicators disposed in the field of view from the headpiece to monitor when predetermine pressure levels are reached in the tank which supplies gas to that headpiece. The predetermined pressure levels are referenced to the residual tank pressure at which the required breathing gas flow is not sustained and visual alarm provisions anticipate those predetermined pressure levels which are critical, in some embodiments of the invention. A cost effective transducer of reduced pressure range senses the tank pressure and noise is eliminated from the transducer signal by common mode rejection in still other embodiments.

  • Patent number: 4667459
Abstract: A handle mounted control for the blade brake clutch mechanism and/or the ground wheel drive of a walk-behind rotary power mower. The control requires two distinct actions for actuation. The first action is movement of a deadman lever in the form of a bail from a disengaged to an engaged position. The second action is movement of the control lever from disengaged position to operating position when the deadman lever is in engaged position. Release of the deadman lever to disengaged position releases the control lever from operating position and permits it to return to disengaged position under the biasing force of a cable connected between the control lever and the controlled mechanism on the mower deck.
