Patent number: 5720427Abstract: An expandable folder is provided which includes a front panel member, a rear panel member, and an expandable gusset which connects the panel members and forms the bottom and sides of the folder. Reinforcing means are provided upon critical or highly stressed locations to enhance the durability and useful life of the folder. Various types of reinforcement are provided about and, preferably, over the top of the gusset. The end portions of the gussets along the sides and, where applicable, the bottom, preferably have a width which is at least twice the width of the gusset folds. The outer surfaces of the inner front and rear panel members are also reinforced to strengthen the folder at least in the areas where the gusset is attached, and, for best results, on the entire outer surfaces of the panels.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1996Date of Patent: February 24, 1998Assignee: The Smead Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Theodore V. Kachel, Jonathan B. Rivlin, Robert E. Hawes, Jr., Lee A. Boy, Setsuo Kanamoto, Eric R. Aaldenberg, John Heffernan, James J. Lynch, Cheryl Dellacroce-Steinberg, Duane Christensen

Patent number: 5284362Abstract: A reinforced shelf filing folder having front and rear panel members connected along a fold line and a tab member connected to a first side edge of the rear panel member. Reinforcement is applied to both sides of the tab member and to the outer surface of the fold line extending onto the adjacent surfaces of the front nd rear panel members. Finally, additional reinforcement means is optionally applied to the outer surfaces of the front and rear panel members, disposed along a side portion of the rear panel member opposite the first side edge and over the fold line to a corresponding portion on the front panel member. Alternatively, the additional reinforcement can be applied to the outer and inner sides of the front panel member along the first side edge. These reinforcements increase the wear resistance and life of the folder.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1992Date of Patent: February 8, 1994Assignee: Esselte Pendaflex CorporationInventors: Theodore V. Patent number: 5275439Abstract: A folder that hangs on a standard frame in office storage equipment which includes a sheet of flexible material folded at a medial line to form a bottom edge with an exterior surface and front and rear portions joined at the bottom edge, each of front and rear portions having an interior surface and an exterior surface, wherein the ends of said front and rear portions removed from said bottom edge are folded over to form top terminal folded portions, a reinforcing layer comprising one or more strips of plastic material laminated onto the folder and applied to substantially all of the exterior surfaces to increase the wear resistance, strength and life of said folder, and means for hanging the folder on the frame.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1992Date of Patent: January 4, 1994Assignee: Esselte Pendaflex CorporationInventors: Robert E. Hawes, Jr., Cheryl Dellacroce-Steinberg, Eric Aaldenberg, James J. Lynch

Patent number: 5261636Abstract: A hanging folder has reinforcing strips along its top and bottom edges, and color contrasted easy-insert label slots. These strips and contrasting slots protect against wear to the folder and thus prolong the usefulness of the folder.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1991Date of Patent: November 16, 1993Assignee: Esselte Pendaflex CorporationInventors: Robert E. Hawes, Jr., Cheryl Dellacroce, Eric Aaldenberg, James J. Lynch

Patent number: 5256130Abstract: A method for manufacturing improved paper office supplies comprises determining which critical areas or portions of the office supplies are prone to wear and tear, and applying reinforcement upon or adjacent to those critical areas or portions to increase the strength and resistance of the office supplies to such wear and tear. This invention also provides some examples of reinforced paper office supplies.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1992Date of Patent: October 26, 1993Assignee: Esselte Pendaflex CorporationInventors: Theodore V. Patent number: 5052646Abstract: Hanging folder rods are flat strips having notches or hooks at their ends for riding on the rails of a file support frame. Notch depth is extended by long tips at the ends of the strip. By contouring the notches, extension, and end corners of the strips, the strips can be manufactured as a nested series with little void space between them. Strips nest, in one embodiment, with the top edge of one strip adjacent the bottom edge of another strip or, in another embodiment, with the bottom edges of two strips adjacent to each other. Manufacturing economy is effected by forming, for example, by stamping, the rods in the nested condition.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1990Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: Esselte Pendaflex CorporationInventors: Robert E. Hawes, Jr., Manfred O. Herbst

Patent number: 4568052Abstract: Each arm of a first pair of arms is pivotally connected at spaced-apart pivot locations to a first clamp bracket and to an adjustment bracket, respectively, and each arm of a second pair of arms is pivotally connected at spaced-apart locations to a second clamp bracket and to the adjustment bracket, respectively. A first control is engageable with an arm of the first pair for selectively enabling and preventing pivoting movement thereof, and a second control is engageable with an arm of the second pair for selectively enabling and preventing pivoting movement thereof. When the first and second controls both enable the respective pivoting movements, the second clamp bracket can be moved to a desired position, and, when the first and second controls both prevent the respective pivoting movement, the second clamp bracket retains its position.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1982Date of Patent: February 4, 1986Assignee: Esselte Pendaflex CorporationInventors: Jack Solomon, Robert E.
