  • Patent number: 5692538
Abstract: An undersea hydraulic coupling member is disclosed having angled flow ports to prevent ingress of debris into the hydraulic lines, and having a bleed passage to allow trapped hydraulic fluid to bleed off when the coupling members are disconnected. The poppet valve in combination with the angled flow ports helps keep the hydraulic system clear of debris when the members are disconnected.

  • Patent number: 5469887
Abstract: A hydraulic coupling having a pressure-equalizing valve in the female coupler body is disclosed. A passage extends between the central bore or receiving chamber and the external surface of the female member. A valve in the passage allows sea water to flow into the annulus during connection or disconnection of the male and female coupling members, thus equalizing the pressure and preventing implosion of seals during disconnection of the coupling members.

  • Patent number: 5390702
Abstract: An undersea hydraulic coupling having a male member with a stepped outer body is inserted into a female member having a bore with stepped internal cylindrical surface. The step in the male member defines first and second external cylindrical surfaces which are slidably received in the female member bore and in a sleeve member before the seals, which are retained by the sleeve member, engage the male member. Thus, the male member is more accurately positioned and guided into the seals, insuring greater seal reliability and longer seal life. The stepped surfaces also help prevent implosion of the seals due to sea pressure when the end of the male member comes out of the seals.

  • Patent number: 5365972
Abstract: An undersea hydraulic coupling including a male member and a female member, each of the members having a poppet valve biased to a closed position. At least one of the members has a bleed passage through the poppet valve and a bleed valve which opens to allow hydraulic fluid at high pressure to escape through the bleed passage until the pressure is below a predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 5355909
Abstract: An undersea hydraulic coupling have a pair of hollow metal seals which are pressure energized to seal between the male and female members of the coupling. One of the hollow metal seals is configured to expand radially while the second hollow metal seal is compressible along the longitudinal axis of the coupling. These seals provide a fluid tight sealing arrangement upon pressurization of the coupling, without the need for external pre-load devices.

  • Patent number: 5339861
Abstract: An undersea hydraulic coupling with a hollow metal o-ring seal for sealing between the male and female members is disclosed. The hollow metal o-ring seal is held captive between an internal shoulder and a retainer insertable into the internal bore of the female member. The retainer may be slidable to compress the metal o-ring seal axially. The metal o-ring seal also may be pressure-energized to expand the seal cavity in response to fluid pressure in the coupling.

  • Patent number: 5284183
Abstract: A coupling having a seal member with an annular flexible metal seal surface for sealing with a male member or probe. The metal seal surface is integral with the seal member and extends into the bore of the female member. The metal seal surface is urged radially inwardly against the male member in response to internal fluid pressure in the coupling.

  • Patent number: 5203374
Abstract: A pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling for use in undersea drilling and production operations, the coupling having radial passageways communicating between the male and female members such that substantial fluid pressure is not exerted against the face of either member during coupling or uncoupling or during the coupled state. Check valves in both the male and female members are opened when the male member probe is fully inserted into the receiving chamber of the female member. Mutually opposed valve actuators contact one another to effectuate the simultaneous opening of each check valve, and allow fluid to flow through a valve port and then radially through matching fluid passageways in the male and female members. The radial passageways of the male and female members match up at their longitudinal surfaces so that fluid pressure between the male and female members is in a substantially radial direction and is not exerted at the face of either member.

  • Patent number: 5052439
Abstract: An undersea hydraulic coupling includes a male member and female member, and a two-piece retainer for restraining radial movement of a wedge-shaped annular seal into the central bore of the female member. The two-piece retainer includes a cylindrical retainer sleeve member slidably received within the female member bore, and a threaded retainer-locking member threadable to mating threads in the wall of the central bore. The retainer-locking member holds the retainer sleeve member in place within the female member bore. The annular seal is restrained from radial movement by a dovetail interfit with a mating shoulder on at least one of the retainer sleeve and the retainer-locking members.

  • Patent number: 5015016
Abstract: A coupling having an internal pressure-loaded V-seal between a male member and a female member incudes a sleeve member insertable into the female member bore. The V-seal is repeatably positionable in the sleeve member such that insertion of the male member serves to slightly compress the V-seal and thereby preload the seal before pressurization. Upon pressurization of the coupling, the lips of the V-seal are urged to expand longitudinally against the leading face of the male member and an internal shoulder in the sleeve member. The pressurization of the coupling also tends to urge the sleeve member toward the male member, to enhance the seal and to compensate for any tolerances between the coupling halves.

  • Patent number: 4915419
Abstract: An apparatus for locking together simultaneously one or more male and female coupling members is disclosed, primarily for use in undersea hydraulic applications. The apparatus comprises a sliding lock plate supported by a first junction plate, the plate being slideable perpendicular to the coupling axis between an unlocked position and a locked position. The sliding lock plate has a number of passages configured to receive each coupling member therethrough in the unlocked position. In the locked position, the passages are configured to engage the circumference of the male and female coupling members and restrict axial movement of the members.

  • Patent number: 4858648
Abstract: A self-flushing subsea hydraulic coupling having a pair of interconnectable male and female and members and a flushing port for flushing the hydraulic line connected to one of the members. Each of the members includes a poppet valve, the poppet valve of the member not designated for flushing being sealed during the flushing operation. During the flushing operation, the male member is partially withdrawn from the female member receiving chamber so that its leading face passes the flushing port. Flushing fluid passes through the hydraulic line connected to the member, through the poppet valve, into the receiving chamber and out through the flushing port. An o-ring seals the receiving chamber and prevents sea water from entering the receiving chamber when the male member is partially withdrawn from the female member.

  • Patent number: 4854615
Abstract: A joint for forming a sealed junction between two large diameter cylinders or rocket motor casings. A tongue-and-groove arrangement employs a pressure-energized metal seal which expands radially when the cylinders are internally pressurized. The radial expansion enhances the sealing effect of the metal seal between the tongue and the groove. The metal seal will withstand extreme pressures and temperatures which can adversely affect the sealing capability of elastomer O-rings.

  • Patent number: 4813454
Abstract: A pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling having a male and female member wherein the male member includes at least one balancing port communicating between the leading face and outer side wall. When the male member is sealed in relation to the annular elastomeric seal in the receiving chamber of the female member, and the poppet valves of each member are closed, the balancing port is used to bleed seawater into or out from the annulus between the coupling members.
