Patent number: 4620985Abstract: A method of protecting at least one portion of the surface of a glass bottle from scuffing due to contact with bottle handling and filling equipment, other bottles, and bottle containers, comprises the step of providing a glass bottle defining a circumferential groove in the area to be protected. The bottle is rotated about a horizontal axis and an uncured plastic liquid is applied to the bottle surface by flow coating the plastic into the circumferential groove. An amount of plastic liquid is applied which is sufficient to fill completely the circumferential groove. The plastic liquid is then cured to produce a bottle which is protected from scuffing by a circumferential band of plastic material in the area to be protected.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1985Date of Patent: November 4, 1986Assignee: The D. Patent number: 4605575Abstract: A decorative emblem is formed by producing a decorative surface, which may be printed and embossed, on a foil substrate. An integral bezel is then formed around the periphery of the decorative surface. Fluent plastic is cast onto the decorative surface to form a meniscus over it. Upon curing, the plastic cap gives a lens effect to the decorative surface. The decorative emblem may be adapted with several types of different attachment means, such as an edge adhesive strip, for fastening it to the intended surface such as an automobile, appliance, or other object.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1985Date of Patent: August 12, 1986Assignee: The D. Patent number: 4407421Abstract: A glass container of the type designed to be coated with a plastic material to reduce breakage and shattering. The glass container has a neck portion which terminates in a discharge opening, a mid-portion and a base having a bearing surface upon which said bottle stands. The base comprises a plurality of concentric annular ribs as longitudinal extensions defining first and second annular channels and a central reservoir which are concentric about the center of the base with the first channel being outside the second channel. The channels and the reservoir are dimensioned and located to be filled with a charge of cast plastic. When the base is coated in this manner shattering and fragmentation of the container at the base is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1981Date of Patent: October 4, 1983Assignee: The D. L. Auld CompanyInventor: Robert E. Waugh

Patent number: 4292827Abstract: A method for making decorative emblems, plaques, or panels comprising flow coating a clear, fluent plastic material onto the surface of a decorated substrate. Flow coating is accomplished with a multiple orifice nozzle (or nozzles) which is passed over the surface of the decorative substrate at a steady speed to give a uniform thickness coating of 0.020 to 0.030 inch. The flow coated fluent plastic is then cured and the coated decorative substrate is stamped to form slightly convex emblems, plaques, or panels.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1979Date of Patent: October 6, 1981Assignee: The D. Patent number: 4225638Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating articles with a layer of plastic in which drippage of excess coating material onto the freshly coated articles is eliminated. A plurality of liquid plastic applicator nozzles positioned above a coating station supply coating material to an article. When the coating operation is completed, a suckback cycle is initiated creating a negative pressure inside the nozzles and drawing back into the nozzles any excess material. Where different amounts of coating material may be supplied to different zones on the article, each individual zone of applicator nozzles is independently controlled, both in the flow and suck-back cycles of operation.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1979Date of Patent: September 30, 1980Assignee: The D.
