Patent number: 9624445Abstract: Process for preparing a hydrocarbon product from a solid carbonaceous fuel (8), the process at least comprising the steps of: (a) supplying a solid carbonaceous fuel (8) and an oxygen containing stream (9) to a burner of a gasification reactor (10), wherein a CO2 containing transport gas (30, 32) is used to transport the solid carbonaceous fuel (8) to the burner wherein the weight ratio of CO2 to the carbonaceous fuel in step (a) is less than 0.5 on dry basis.; (b) partially oxidising the carbonaceous fuel in the gasification reactor, thereby obtaining a gaseous stream at least comprising CO, CO2, and H2 (11); (c) removing the gaseous stream obtained in step (b) from the gasification reactor; (d) optionally shift converting (16) at least part of the gaseous stream as obtained in step (c) thereby obtaining a CO depleted stream, (e) subjecting the gaseous stream of step (c) and/or the optional CO depleted stream of step (d) to a Fischer-Tropsch reaction to obtain a hydrocarbon product (24).Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2006Date of Patent: April 18, 2017Assignee: SHELL OIL COMPANYInventors: Robert Erwin Van den Berg, Johannes Margaretha Anna Joan Van Montfort, Jacobus Hendrikus Scheerman, Johannes Gerardus Maria Schilder

Publication number: 20140223822Abstract: A method and system for producing synthesis gas comprising CO, CO2, and H2 from a carbonaceous stream using an oxygen containing stream. A stream containing a carbonaceous material, and a stream containing oxygen are injected into a gasification reactor, where the carbonaceous stream is partially oxidised to obtain a raw synthesis gas. The raw synthesis gas is removed from the gasification reactor and directed into a quenching section wherein a liquid, preferably water, is injected in the form of a mist.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 4, 2014Publication date: August 14, 2014Applicant: Shell Oil CompanyInventors: Robert Erwin VAN DEN BERG, Franciscus Gerardus VAN DONGEN, Thomas Paul VON KOSSAK-GLOWCZEWSKI, Hendrik Jan VAN DER PLOEG, Pieter Lammert ZUIDEVELD

Patent number: 8317885Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus for gasifying a fuel to form synthesis gas wherein also a slag is formed. The apparatus comprises: a pressure shell; a slag bath; a gasifier wall; a free-fall trajectory for slag; and a heat shield. The gasifier wall is arranged inside the pressure shell defining a gasification chamber. It comprises a converging wall part that is provided with a slag discharge opening, located above the quench fluid in the slag bath. The heat shield is arranged above the slag bath between the free-fall trajectory and the pressure shell. The heat shield has a wall structure for allowing passage of a cooling fluid, the wall structure comprising an upper wall part and a lower wall part. The lower wall part of the heat shield is essentially refractory free.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2005Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Shell Oil CompanyInventors: Robert Erwin Van Den Berg, Dirk Lauterbach

Patent number: 7741377Abstract: A process to prepare a paraffinic hydrocarbon from a solid carbonaceous feedstock, preferably coal by performing the following steps, (a) feeding an oxygen comprising gas and the carbonaceous feedstock to a burner positioned horizontal and firing into a reactor vessel, (b) performing a partial oxidation of the carbonaceous feedstock in said burner to obtain a stream of hot synthesis gas which flows upwardly relative to the burner and a liquid slag which flows downwardly relative to the burner, (c) cooling the hot synthesis gas by first cooling the gas to a temperature of between 500 and 900° C. by injecting a gaseous or liquid cooling medium into the synthesis gas and subsequently second cooling the gas in to below 500° C.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2007Date of Patent: June 22, 2010Assignee: Shell Oil CompanyInventors: Robert Erwin Van Den Berg, Franciscus Gerardus Van Dongen, Thomas Paul Von Kossak-Glowczewski, Hendrik Jan Van Der Ploeg, Pieter Lammert Zuideveld
