Abstract: A method is provided for reducing wear between moving steel-on-steel surfaces which comprises introducing between the surfaces a lubricant composition containing an antiwear amount of a 5-alkylbenzotriazole wherein the alkyl group contains from 4 to about 16 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A two-step process for preparing a stabilized lubricating oil resistant to oxidation and sludge formation upon exposure to a highly oxidative environment is provided. The first step of the present process comprises contacting a lubricating oil stock with elemental sulfur in the presence of a catalyst material selcted from the group consisting of alumina, silica, aluminosilicate, a metal of Groups II-A, II-B, VI-B or VIII of the Periodic Table of Elements, an oxide of a metal of Groups II-A, II-B, VI-B or VIII, a sulfide of a metal of Groups II-A, II-B, VI-B or VIII, clay, silica combined with an oxide of a metal of Groups II-A, III-A, IV-B or V-B, and combinations thereof in a flow reactor or under conditions comparable to those existing in a flow reactor. The second step of the present process comprises contacting the product of the first step with hydrogen in the presence of alumina impregnated with at least about 10 weight percent of MoO.sub.3 and at least about 2.

Abstract: Lubricant compositions are provided, containing an antiwear amount of a compound having the structure Y(CN).sub.n in which n is a whole number from 2 to 6 and when n is 2, Y is alkylene, phenylene or benzylene, when n is 3, Y is a tris(ethyleneoxy) paraffin having from 3 to 12 carbon atoms, when n is 4, Y is a tetrakis(ethyleneoxy) paraffin having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms, when n is 5, Y is a pentakis(ethyleneoxy) paraffin having from 5 to 16 carbon atoms, and when n l is 6, Y is a hexakis(ethyleneoxy) cycloparaffin having from 6 to 16 carbon atoms.

Abstract: Lubricant compositions are provided, containing as antiwear agents, a .beta.-thiopropionitrile having the structure R--S--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CN in which R is alkyl, nitriloalkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl, aryl, or benzothiazolyl, mercapto-thiadiazolyl, NCCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --X--(CH.sub.2).sub.n where X is oxygen or sulfur and n is a whole number from 1 to 20. Particularly contemplated are lubricating oils and greases containing the aforementioned antiwear agents.

Abstract: The invention provides lubricant compositions containing (1) a product of reaction between an alkenylsuccinic anhydride and trishydroxymethylaminomethane and (2) an anti-rust amount of 1,1'-binaphthol.
