Patent number: 5571314Abstract: A thixotropic slurry is used as a drag reducing agent for water borne vess. The slurry comprises a polymer, a carrier, a surfactant and a dispersant. The slurry is buffered against changes in pH which can be the cause of separation of the constituents during storage in the vessel. The slurry also has a more rapid initial drag reduction response time since the polymer is coated with a monomolecular layer of surfactant.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1973Date of Patent: November 5, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Robert F. Supcoe, Ira M. Felsen

Patent number: 5565133Abstract: A concentrated slurry comprises a high molecular weight polymer, a carrier, a wetting agent, and dispersant. The slurry is characterized by its ability to reduce turbulent flow and skin friction thereby reducing drag of a vessel when the slurry is mixed with water and dispersed in a thin sheet along the surface of a vessel.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1973Date of Patent: October 15, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Robert F. Supcoe, Allan P. Evans

Patent number: 5554214Abstract: A exterior hull coating with drag reducing qualities for use on waterborne vehicles. The coating comprises a water-soluble polymer of high molecular weight in a vehicle, and a diluent, and contains a swelling deferent agent, driers, and pigments. The coating may be applied by the well-known techniques of brush painting rolling, and spraying. The coating ablates in a timed-release fashion into the fluid boundary layer adjacent to the vehicle skin to reduce drag by the reduction of turbulence and the promotion of laminar flow in the boundary layer.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1976Date of Patent: September 10, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Robert F. Supcoe, Francis J. Moran

Patent number: 5552456Abstract: The invention relates to a gel used as a drag reducing slurry. The slurry stored aboard a vessel and is pumped into the region of laminar flow adjacent the vessel to reduce drag. The slurry is a thixotropic media composed of a surfactant coating the individual particles of drag reducing polymer resin as well as an anionic surfactant and a carrier liquid. The slurry forms a micelle structure and thus has an extremely long shelf life.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1974Date of Patent: September 3, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Robert F. Supcoe, Ira M. Felsen, William T. Donahue
