  • Publication number: 20070168915
Abstract: Multivariate analysis can be performed to determine whether a computing environment is encountering a business disruption (e.g., relatively long end-user response times) or other problem. Cluster analysis (comparing more recent data with a particular cluster of good operating data), predictive modeling, or other suitable multivariate analysis can be used. A probable cause analysis may be performed in conjunction with the multivariate analysis. A probable cause analysis may be used when one or more abnormal instruments, abnormal components, abnormal load patterns, suspicious actions (such as resource provisioning or deprovisioning activities), software or hardware updates or failures, recent changes to the computing environment (component provisioning, change of a control, etc.), or any combination thereof.

  • Publication number: 20060036726
Abstract: A user interface can present a unified view as a dynamic object-oriented metaphor for displaying information pertaining to any one or more applications and portions thereof (e.g., transaction types) and logical and physical components within a distributed computing environment, mapping between applications or portions thereof and information pertaining to those logical and physical components used by the applications or portions thereof, the health of the applications or portions thereof and logical and physical components, and the ability to control any or all of the applications or portions thereof and logical and physical components.

  • Publication number: 20060009954
Abstract: An application or a portion thereof can be thought of as a container having a set of instruments with mathematical descriptions of relationships between the instruments and other portions of the application infrastructure. The set of instruments may include only those instruments determined to significantly affect or be significantly affected by an application or a portion thereof running within a distributed computing environment. Models can be generated to include those instruments that significantly affect or are significantly affected by the application or a portion thereof and their mathematical descriptions of relationships between those instruments. By using the models, portions of an application environment across tiers can be controlled in a more coherent manner to better achieve the business objectives of an organization. The methods and systems can also help to identify and correct potential problems that may not be seen when examining tiers or sub-tiers individually.

  • Publication number: 20060007941
Abstract: Systems are described which allow management communications in an application infrastructure irrespective of the functional states of various components in the application infrastructure. Components in the application infrastructure may be coupled to a management interface component, which may in turn be coupled to a central management component. Communications from the central management component may be routed to a local management interface component, and from that local management interface component to another component in the application infrastructure for which the management communication is intended. In this manner, such other component may be accessed (for purposes of management) regardless of the functional state of the other application infrastructure components in the application infrastructure.

  • Publication number: 20050243814
Abstract: Systems and methods are described which allow communications in an application infrastructure to be prioritized based on a variety of factors, including the component or application flow with which the communications are associated. A communication may be received and classified into one of a series of application flows. A management communication may be received from a management interface component over a management network and forwarded in a prioritized manner to an application infrastructure component in the application infrastructure. Similarly, a management communication may be received from an application infrastructure component in the application infrastructure in a prioritized manner and forwarded over a management infrastructure to a management interface component.

  • Patent number: 5870089
Abstract: A system and a method are both described for transferring data throughout computer systems, computer networks, data transmission facilities, and the like from an originating location to destination devices (50) at various physical locations. An electronic package data structure (10) is also described that includes document references (14), destination references (16), and package attributes (18, 28, 40). The document references (14) may be document names and locations or actual document contents. Destination references (16) identify printers, e-mail addresses, facsimile machines, electronic pagers and the like. A graphical user interface or GUI (140) serves to allow a user (52) to select documents, destinations, and additional package attributes that create the electronic package data structure (10). Once the components and attributes are assembled, the GUI is used to send the package (10) to a delivery service (12).

  • Patent number: 5335346
Abstract: The system and method of this invention provides an access control list which spans across object boundaries in an object oriented database. In addition to providing read and write access permissions, the access control list provides execute semantics which apply to the execution of methods in an object oriented database. Within the entries of the access control lists, each of the permissions for read, write, and execute can be assigned separately to each of a number of ids representing user ids or group ids. Upon request for access to the data by the user, the user id of the user and the group ids for which the user is a member are searched for within the entries to determine whether the user has the privileges to perform the operation requested against the objects. In addition, the access control policies are inherited from an object's superobject; resulting in a least privilege for the object.
