  • Publication number: 20230304124
Abstract: A molten metal filter box. The filter box includes a filter housing provided in a flow path for molten metal. A horizontal partition is disposed within the filter housing and has at least one filter receiving passage. A filter medium in the shape of a substantially flat plate is positioned within the filter receiving passage and below an inflow path of the molten metal. The filter medium includes a hole. A filter handling tool is disposed within the hole. The filter handling tool can optionally include a handle secured to the molten metal filter box to suspend the filter medium. Advantageously, the filter medium can be removed by grasping the filter handling tool and removing the filter medium.

  • Publication number: 20220143688
Abstract: An electromagnetic device for pumping, circulating or transferring non-ferrous molten metal has a duct made of a refractory material with a first aperture at a first end of the duct and a second aperture at a second end of the duct. The duct conveys a body of non-ferrous molten metal between the first and second apertures. The duct encloses the body of non-ferrous molten metal between the first and second apertures. The duct has opposing first and second external side surfaces. A first inductor assembly extends adjacent to the first side surface. The first inductor assembly comprises a plurality of inductors arranged along a length of the duct adjacent to the first side surface. An electronic circuit generates direct current pulses that energise each inductor of the plurality of inductors in a sequence, so as to generate a moving magnetic field within the body of non-ferrous molten metal which propels the body of non-ferrous molten metal along the duct.

  • Publication number: 20220040612
Abstract: According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a method of priming a ceramic filter element for removal of solid inclusions from liquid metal is provided. The filter element is contained in a filter box and at least two separate inductors are placed on opposed sides of the filter element. The method includes the steps of a) applying an excitation current to the inductors, b) adding sufficient liquid metal to cover an upstream side of the filter element, c) allowing the current induced in the liquid metal by the inductors to create Lorentz forces which press upon and stir the liquid metal such that the liquid metal is forced into the ceramic filter element, hence priming the filter element, and d) discontinuing the excitation current once a predetermined degree of priming has been obtained.

  • Patent number: 9605332
Abstract: An apparatus and method are described for effectively priming a non-electrically conductive filter for removal of solid inclusions from liquid metal. In one embodiment, the ceramic filter media is surrounded by a low frequency induction coil (1-60 Hz) with its axis aligned in the direction of the net metal flow. The coil is positioned to enhance the heating of any metal frozen onto, or in the pores of, the filter element. In one embodiment, the coil is positioned in order to generate Lorentz forces, which act to cause heated metal to impinge on the upper surface of the filter element, enhancing the priming action. Once a filter equipped with such a coil has been primed, it can be kept hot or reheated, and subsequently reused during several batch tapping sequences.
