  • Patent number: 6425436
Abstract: An apparatus and method for extracting a cast iron pipe from a centrifugal casting machine and for also breaking the continuity of an annular sand core used to form the bell end of the pipe. The apparatus has a carrier member on which are mounted extractor carrier jaw assemblies and core continuity breaking members. The extractor jaw assemblies are movable between extended and retracted positions. One end of the carrier member is inserted into the bell end of the pipe while the pipe is in the casting machine. The extractor jaw assemblies are retracted as the carrier member enters the pipe. As the carrier member enters the pipe, the core continuity breaking members plow through parts of the sand core to break the continuity of the sand core. The extractor jaw assemblies are then extended to contact the interior surface of the pipe wall and the apparatus is retracted, pulling the pipe out of the mold in the casting machine.

  • Patent number: 6397923
Abstract: A system for removing waste material from the bell end of a cast iron pipe is disclosed. The system has both a cleaning assembly and an exhaust system. The cleaning assembly has a plurality of wire brushes mounted on a shaft. The shaft is mounted on a cart that also supports a movable part of the exhaust system. The cart moves the wire brushes and part of the movable part of the exhaust system into and out of the bell end of the pipe. A motor on the cart rotates the shaft and brushes, and a tilt mechanism tilts the brushes down to contact the pipe. The pipe is rotated about its central longitudinal axis as the brushes contact and clean the pipe. The rotating brushes clean the sand core from the end of the pipe, and the waste sand is drawn by the exhaust system to the bag house where it is filtered. The exhaust system also includes a stationary duct. The stationary duct has a door and a chute. Larger chunks of waste sand can be removed from the exhaust system through the door and chute.

  • Patent number: 6149376
Abstract: A system, apparatus and method are disclosed for moving an elongate object such as a pipe between lowered and raised positions, preferably while rotating the object to maintain its shape. The system and method use two apparatuses, an upender and a downender for moving the pipe between lowered and raised positions. The upender tilts a lowered pipe received from a casting machine to the raised position and places the raised pipe on a support station. The pipe is rotated while on the upender through at least part of the range of travel. The upright pipe on the support station may be moved through an annealing furnace and then the downender may lift the pipe from the support station and tilt it downward toward the horizontal while rotating the pipe through part of the range of travel. The lowered pipe is then pushed off of the downender by kick off arms.

  • Patent number: 6090180
Abstract: A cupola emission control system is provided that includes both improved physical emission control equipment and improved controls for operating such equipment. The physical emission control improvements include an orifice ring of restricted diameter above the cupola main afterburners to improve the turbulence of the air in the upper cupola area to allow improved combustion of carbon monoxide. Further, twin venturis are provided with improved air passage control equipment to affect the temperature in the upper cupola combustion area. Further, an improved control system is provided whereby actual time calculations are made for remaining emission permitted amounts of certain pollutants, mainly carbon monoxide, and real time adjustments are made for cupola operation to assure compliance with such permitted emission limits.

  • Patent number: 5427604
Abstract: A method and apparatus for feeding alloy additive and burden materials to the burden in a vertical shaft furnace working volume generally by gravity-feeding the alloy additive to the furnace tuyere for entrainment in the blast media and transfer to the burden, which improves the recovery rate of the charged additive components in the molten metal and, allows utilization of undersized materials without secondary handling and treatment of the feed materials or utilization of pneumatic feed apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5037144
Abstract: A restrained pipe joint is provided for affixing the spigot end of a first pipe into the socket end of a second pipe. The pipe joint includes a circular restraining ring and a retainer ring which includes a groove ring and a plurality of locking segments. When the retaining ring is tightened, the retaining ring is forced against the circular restraining ring, thereby engaging the locking segment teeth into the spigot end of the first pipe. The groove ring abuts the circular restraining ring which holds the spigot end of the first pipe within the socket end of the second pipe.
