  • Patent number: 5285423
Abstract: A broadline seismic survey is carried out by positioning a plurality of areal arrays of seismic detectors along each of a plurality of broadline receiver lines along the surface of the earth. Array centers along an inline direction of each receiver line are staggered by one-half of an array interval from array centers along the inline direction of adjacent receiver lines. Each detector array on a given receiver line is elongated in a cross-line direction to such receiver line to effect an areal array coverage between broadline centers of the adjacent receiver lines being on opposite sides of the given receiver line. The seismic detectors in each array are connected in common to a recording means.

  • Patent number: 4775962
Abstract: A fluid filled marine seismic streamer employs a plurality of hydrophones spaced apart along its length to detect seismic reflection signals from subsurface formations below a water layer. A plurality of fluid blocking members are also spaced apart along the length of the streamer. A plurality of flow through spacers having varying flow through apertures are positioned between each hydrophone adjacent to a fluid blocking member that generates pressure pulses in the fill fluid of significant magnitude to be detected by such hydrophone. The size of the flow through apertures of such spacers progressively increases in a direction leading from the fluid blocking member toward the hydrophone.

  • Patent number: 4759001
Abstract: A hosewall terminating apparatus for a streamer section utilizing a load bearing flexible hosewall includes an inner sleeve having radially extending outward protrusions and an outer sleeve having radially extending inward protrusions. With the inner sleeve positioned within the outer sleeve, the radial distance between ends of these protrusions are spaced-apart to provide a gap for the position of the flexible hosewall of the streamer section. The hosewall of the streamer section is secured between these protrusions and the sleeve surfaces when the outer sleeve is reduced in diameter by swaging.

  • Patent number: 4737937
Abstract: A marine seismic streamer employs a plurality of sections connected together sequentially with fluid blocking connectors. Each section contains a plurality of groupings of hydrophones with the hydrophones within each grouping connected together to provide a single seismic signal output for such groupings. The two terminal groupings of each section have variable hydrophone densities along their lengths so as to discriminate against noise generated in the streamer by the action of the fluid blocking connectors in producing pressure waves in the fluid fill within the streamer.

  • Patent number: 4736345
Abstract: A spacer for a marine seismic streamer employs a compliant material that mechanically isolates the spacer from the hosewall and strain members of the streamer and also allows the flow of fill fluid therethrough so as to prevent pressure pulse build-up in such fluid during towing of the streamer along a line of exploration.

  • Patent number: 4644508
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for selectively reinforcing an acoustic wave traveling in a first predetermined direction in a body of water while attenuating an acoustic wave traveling in a second opposite direction. The output signals from vertically spaced receivers are appropriately delayed and summed to reinforce a wave traveling in the first direction and attenuate the wave traveling in the opposite direction. The invention is particularly useful for reinforcing desirably detected ascending acoustic waves and attenuating undesirably detected surface reflected descending waves.

  • Patent number: 4581724
Abstract: A method of determining source and receiver statics in a marine exploration area overlying a near surface low velocity layer employing a marine vessel for towing a seismic energy source and a marine detector cable, and an on-bottom seismic energy source and seismic detector located at an offset from the marine seismic line of exploration. The towed seismic energy source generates a seismic reflection signal for detection by the towed marine detector cable and a seismic refraction signal to be detected by the on-bottom seismic detector. The on-bottom seismic energy source generates a seismic refraction signal for detection by the towed marine detector cable.

  • Patent number: 4446538
Abstract: An acoustic positioning system locates a marine cable at an exploration site, such cable employing a plurality of hydrophones at spaced-apart positions along the cable. A marine vessel measures water depth to the cable as the vessel passes over the cable and interrogates the hydrophones with sonar pulses along a slant range as the vessel travels in a parallel and horizontally offset path to the cable. The location of the hydrophones is determined from the recordings of water depth and slant range.

  • Patent number: 4405999
Abstract: Arrays of seismic wave sources and seismic wave sensors are towed over an area to be refraction surveyed in such a way that source and sensor geodetic positioning is duplicated during successive source firings. A plurality of traces having these same source/reflection point/sensor geometry are gathered from those produced by each series of successive source firings at the same location and stacked to generate a new trace having improved signal to noise ratio. Positioning is accomplished by uniformly spacing each of the sensors and sources in their respective arrays, the sources being spaced at integer multiples of the spacing of the sensors, and towing both arrays behind the same boat. If irregular or rapidly changing seismic statics are not present, all traces from common reflection points may also be gathered, corrected for normal moveout and stacked to generate a composite trace having enhanced primary reflection returns as well as improved signal to noise ratio.

  • Patent number: 4404664
Abstract: A marine cable positioning system which includes a plurality of magnetic compasses and a plurality of lateral positioning devices spaced at known intervals along the cable being towed by a marine vessel. Readings from the compasses together with readings from a magnetic compass and gyrocompass onboard the towing vessel are gathered and used with a selected reference heading to generate X-Y coordinates of the lateral positioning devices with respect to the towing vessel and selected reference heading. These coordinates are recorded and provided to a cathode ray tube for visual display of the relative position of each lateral positioning device with respect to the vessel and selected heading. Coded digital commands are generated and transmitted to each lateral positioning device for adjustment of its control surfaces whereby the lateral thrust produced the device as it is towed through the water is varied and the horizontal position of the portion of the cable to either side of the device controlled.

  • Patent number: 4387450
Abstract: Marine seismic data is gathered by a single vessel beyond the range of a conventional towed seismic sensor cable through the use of expendable sensors and hard wire transmission cables. The vessel tows a submerged platform adapted to carry several inexpensive seismic sensors and very small diameter multiconductor cables which are controllably released from the platform by appropriate equipment on the towing vessel. Signals generated by each sensor are transmitted back to the towed, submerged platform through the small diameter cable connected to each sensor and are transmitted by other means from the platform to the towing vessel for retransmission, recording and/or display. Each sensor transmits a signal back to the platform until its small diameter cable is completely deployed at which time the cable breaks and is abandoned together with the sensor.
