Patent number: 6422521Abstract: A hose support system for a rail car having a support which includes a flat strap having first and second ends and a tongue connected to the first end of the strap and extending along the strap towards the second end of the strap. A connector at one end of the strap is positioned in a car aperture and a connector at the other end of the strap is positioned in a hose aperture. A resilient element connects the loop at one end of the strap to its connector. A clasp is adjustably positioned on the strap between the ends of the strap and adjusts the length of the strap between the ends. The tongue extends through the clasp. At least one of the connectors may include a loop and a throat extending substantially tangential to the loop. Alternatively, one or more of the connectors may include a spiral. A bearing ring separates the connector and the strap.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2000Date of Patent: July 23, 2002Assignee: New York Air Brake CorporationInventors: Mark Tinklepaugh, Robert Gayfer

Patent number: 6176354Abstract: A truck mounted rail brake including at least a primary beam having a center section and a pair of end sections with guide end extensions. A brake head is removably mounted to the end sections by a pin. The pin is dimensioned to allow pivotal movement of the brake head about the pin. The pin is retained in the brake head by either a tab or another pin above and transverse to the first pin.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1999Date of Patent: January 23, 2001Assignee: New York Air Brake CorporationInventors: Jeffrey F. Sauter, Robert Gayfer, Zdzislaw Samulak

Patent number: 5501513Abstract: An emergency vent valve including a piston responsive to the differential pressure between the brake pipe and a control volume to open a vent valve to vent the brake pipe to atmosphere and includes an exhaust valve responsive to the differential pressure between brake pipe and control volume to connect the control volume to atmosphere through a service check and when the vent valve is opened through a second blow-down choke of a lesser rate which limits the exhausting of the control chamber. A choke valve connected to the piston connects the blow-down choke in series with the service choke when the vent valve becomes fully open.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1994Date of Patent: March 26, 1996Assignee: New York Air Brake CorporationInventor: Robert Gayfer

Patent number: 5478142Abstract: A single sided control valve wherein the service portion is mounted to the front face of a pipe bracket adjacent to the right face and the emergency portion is mounted to the front face adjacent to the left face. The brake pipe, brake cylinder and at least one reservoir port are on the back face and the brake pipe port is adjacent to the left face behind the emergency portion. Mounting brackets each include a horizontal flange with apertures to receive the fasteners which mount the mounting brackets to the vehicle and the horizontal flange which extends from the pipe bracket substantially past the front face and the center of gravity of the control valve. A combined dirt collector and cut-off cock is connected to the brake pipe port adjacent to the left face of the pipe bracket and includes a handle to the left of the left face.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1994Date of Patent: December 26, 1995Assignee: New York Air Brake CorporationInventors: Luann M. LaLone, Robert Gayfer

Patent number: 5429427Abstract: A control valve is mounted to a pipe bracket which also includes a manual release valve and an emergency vent valve. The control valve operates with a single reservoir to perform service and emergency brake applications. A pair of interrelated pistons responsive to brake cylinder pressure, brake pipe pressure and control volume pressure operate a supply valve, a quick service valve end exhaust valve to maintain a fixed ratio of brake cylinder pressure to brake pipe pressure reduction. Quick service volume is continuously vented and appropriate valving is provided to allow plural sequential quick service operations. Structures provided to operate the piston stack so as to initially allow graduated brake release and subsequent direct brake release over the brake releasing range. An accelerated emergency release mechanism is also provided. The supply reservoir is only charged during the direct release mode.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1994Date of Patent: July 4, 1995Assignee: New York Air BrakeInventor: Robert Gayfer

Patent number: 5400874Abstract: A brake system wherein the single actuator is freely mounted to a first brake beam so as to align its force application axis with the axis of a first force transmitting rod connected at its other end to a transfer lever on a second brake beam. A second force transmitting rod connects the transfer lever back to the first brake beam. The mounts for the actuator and the transfer lever are designed for use with brake beams of dual actuator brake systems.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1993Date of Patent: March 28, 1995Assignee: Knorr Brake Holding Corp.Inventors: Robert Gayfer, Zdzislaw Samulak

Patent number: 5387030Abstract: A control valve having, in a series with a first inlet valve of a quick brake volume, two different rates of flow restrictions operable as a function of the position of the piston. The first flow rate of one first restriction is insufficient to cause the piston to a braking position for applying a minimum service application for first range of piston positions which would generally be produced by the mechanical vibration. The second restriction has a greater flow and will accelerate the piston to a braking position for a second range of piston positions which will be produced by the reduction of the brake pipe pressure on one face of the piston. By providing two flow rates, the valve becomes insensitive to mechanically produced forces while maintaining the reaction time of the valve to fluidically produced reduction of brake pipe pressure.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1993Date of Patent: February 7, 1995Assignee: Knorr Brake HoldingInventors: Robert Gayfer, Heinz-Jurgen Listl
