Patent number: 10228049Abstract: A vehicle final drive unit (FDU) of a vehicle driveline. The vehicle FDU includes one or more wet clutches that provide disconnect capabilities in the vehicle FDU, and includes a final drive gearset. Different techniques are provided for discontinuing lubricant supply to the wet clutch(es) when the wet clutch(es) are disconnected in order to preclude unwanted rotations that can be the consequence of adhesion among clutch plates in the wet clutch(es). One technique actively brakes the final drive gearset in the vehicle FDU so that the final drive gearset no longer rotates and no longer throws lubricant to the wet clutch(es). Another technique involves closing an entrance that leads lubricant to the wet clutch(es).Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2015Date of Patent: March 12, 2019Assignee: GKN Driveline North America, Inc.Inventors: Brent M. Peura, David D. Spurlock, Stefan Nicklich, Robert Genway-Haden, Lei Yang

Patent number: 7488257Abstract: A multiple-tube propeller shaft assembly includes a first tube with a plurality of splines defining a splined portion, a second tube with a plurality of splines defining a splined portion, and a third tube with a plurality of splines defining a splined portion. In an embodiment, one end of the third tube is telescopically received within the first tube in a slip tube spline connection, while the other end is received within the second tube in a locked tube spline connection. In another embodiment, the first tube is telescopically received in one end of the third tube in a slip tube spline connection, while the second tube is received in the other end of the third tube in a locked tube spline connection. The propeller shaft assembly can be tuned to absorb crash energy between 0 and 50 kN.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2005Date of Patent: February 10, 2009Assignee: GKN Driveline North America, Inc.Inventors: Danny Lee Booker, Robert Genway-Haden, James Lyon

Patent number: 7416491Abstract: An absorber for use within a shaft assembly of a vehicle is disclosed. The absorber includes at least one cantilever device and at least one constrained layer device. Both devices are disposed within a tube. The absorber is capable of being tuned to specific frequencies and capable of controlling the amount of damping within the shaft assembly. Also disclosed is a shaft assembly having a generally tubular shaft. Disposed within the tubular shaft is the absorber having at least one cantilever device and at least one constrained layer device.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2004Date of Patent: August 26, 2008Assignee: GKN Driveline North America, Inc.Inventors: Craig Andrew Campbell, Robert Genway-Haden

Publication number: 20080103018Abstract: The application aims at determining the locked or unlocked state of a differential (10). According to a first aspect, the determination is carried out on basis of a speed difference of output shafts (16, 18) using speed sensors (36, 38). Steering angle may be used as further input. In a second aspect, a sensing system (70) senses actuating pressure, voltage or current of an actuating mechanism (44). In a third aspect, the first and second aspects can be combined.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 16, 2005Publication date: May 1, 2008Inventors: Brent Michael Peura, Robert Genway-Haden
