  • Patent number: 5810751
Abstract: Therapy apparatus for the exercise of the patient's trunk, back, spine, abdomen and shoulders consisting of a platform having a periphery and upper and lower sides. A pedestal or column extending vertically above the platform upper side supports a seat receiving the patient, and the platform lower side includes a central supporting projection extending below the platform periphery wherein the platform will engage a flat supporting surface, such as the floor, at the support projection and the platform periphery in a tilted manner and a patient located upon the seat may shift their weight to change the angle of platform tilting for exercising the patient's trunk, back, spine, shoulders and torso muscles and ligaments. Support projections of various vertical dimension may be employed to vary the extent of tilting from the vertical, and the apparatus may be utilized with computerized equipment to obtain accurate determination of the extent of exercise and body flexibility.

  • Patent number: 4986534
Abstract: The invention pertains to a method and apparatus for biomechanically analyzing the physical characteristics of the lower extremety including hip, knee and ankle joints and the muscles and ligaments, and the functioning thereof. A frame includes a weight sensing platform and a foot support in the form of a disc is mounted above the platform for nutation about a vertical axis. The periphery of the disc engages the platform, and actuates platform switches whereby a patient standing upon the disc with one foot may angularly displace the disc in a nutating manner applying weight to the platform through the disc periphery, and recording apparatus in the form of computerized data and a visual display permits analysis of the application of weight to the platform. The disc may be selectively vertically adjustable relative to the platform to vary the analysis characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4423720
Abstract: The invention pertains to a patellar stabilizing orthosis used in conjunction with rehabilitation programs involving all nonsurgical patella dislocations or mal-alignments including chondromalacia patellae, dislocation of the patella or subluxation of the patella. The orthosis is designed to achieve left or right lateral or left or right medial stability, and includes a U-shaped body member formed of nonelastic material wherein parallel legs extend from a base portion. A pad located adjacent the inner surface of the base portion is positioned laterally with respect to the patella and the legs are wrapped about the wearer's thigh and calf, and fastened in an overlapped manner. A pair of elastic straps affixed to the body base portion extend obliquely therefrom in a direction opposite to that of the legs and are affixed to the legs while under tension to produce the desired traction against the patella.

  • Patent number: 4379463
Abstract: The invention pertains to a knee cage for providing additional orthopedic support to the knee wherein a multicentric hinge is employed to permit natural knee flexure and high lateral support. A flexible cover of fabric having loops defined in the outer surface thereof is wrapped about the knee and held in an embracing manner by elastic straps. Hinge means each formed by a pair of hinge elements interconnected by multicentric pivot means are removably mounted upon lateral portions of the cover permitting the hinge means to be adjustably secured to the cover permitting optimum location thereon. Elongated elements of the hinge means are received within pockets having hooks defined thereon for cooperating with the cover loops to adjustably affix the hinge means to the cover.
