  • Patent number: 6647182
Abstract: An apparatus for use in optical communication systems to multiplex/demultiplex an optical signal consisting of an optical channel(s) of distinct wavelength(s) having a select channel spacing within a select wavelength range. The apparatus includes a plurality of optical waveguides aligned generally along the same optical axis with each having a propagating end. At least two of the optical waveguides each propagate a distinct multiplexed optical signal comprising a plurality of channels, with the multiplexed optical waveguides being arranged in a multiplexed linear array. The others of the optical waveguides are single channel waveguides arranged in a two dimensional array with linear rows perpendicular to the multiplex linear array and with each linear row corresponding to a multiplex optical waveguide.

  • Publication number: 20020141725
Abstract: A fiber pigtail template assembly includes first and second silicon wafers each having a planar surface with a plurality of corresponding grooves therein extending from a leading edge toward a trailing edge. The plurality of corresponding grooves, with the planar surfaces in abutment and the corresponding grooves aligned define a plurality of fiber channels. The first and second silicon wafers further cooperatively define a receptacle between the fiber channels and the trailing edges of the first and second silicon wafers with the planar surfaces of the silicon wafers in abutment with the grooves aligned. A minor diameter leading portion of an optical fiber is received in each fiber channel and the receptacle is sized to receive major diameter trailing portions of each fiber without causing a bending radius of the fiber sufficient to materially degrade wavelength propagation.

  • Patent number: 6421479
Abstract: A bulk optic (de)multiplexer for fiber optic communications systems includes a diffraction grating having a diffraction surface, a waveguide array including a plurality of waveguides having an input/output end for emitting and receiving optical signals, and a focusing optic in optical communication between the diffraction grating and the waveguide array along an optical axis. The focusing optic focuses beams from the diffraction surface of the grating for optical coupling with the input/output ends of the waveguides. The (de)multiplexer further includes a frame. A fixed mount is provided between the focusing optic and the frame. A first adjustable mount is provided between the waveguide array and the frame and a second adjustable mount is provided between the diffraction grating and the frame. Preferably, the optical axis corresponds to a Z axis of orthogonal X, Y, Z axes and the waveguides of the waveguide array are aligned with the input/output ends along an input/output axis.
