Patent number: 9044286Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods are provided for applying a controlled amount of torque during a surgical procedure. In one exemplary embodiment, after the amount of torque applied reaches a threshold amount, a modular driver tip can be deformed, for instance by breaking into pieces. A containment shield disposed around at least a portion of the tip is configured to receive at least a portion of the tip after it is deformed. In one aspect, multiple modular driver tips can be disposed in a cartridge, with a distal-most tip being held by a driver tip holder that has a holding force that is greater than a threshold torque value of the tip. Exemplary methods for operating surgical drivers and systems that include tips that deform at a threshold torque value, and a multitude of embodiments of tools and systems, are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2012Date of Patent: June 2, 2015Inventors: Michael O'Neil, Andrew Topulous, Robert Hurley

Publication number: 20070225845Abstract: A method to achieve perceived reliability for repairable systems including goal setting of different phases of the product life cycle. The method includes consideration of a plurality of product life cycle phases to determine a plurality of failure rate multipliers which are transformed to mean time between failures multipliers and normalized. Using these computed mean times between failures multipliers and a chosen level of customer use, the box-of-parts required mean time between failures level can be calculated. Also, the required mean time between failures for design, manufacturing, infant mortality, and service phase of product life cycle can be computed.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 21, 2006Publication date: September 27, 2007Inventors: Robert Hurley, Vinod Chopra

Publication number: 20050159496Abstract: One or more external surfaces of an extruded foam are coated by co-extruding a skin of polymer on the surface to reduce the diffusion the foaming gases out of the cells of the solidifying polymer foam. The sealing effect can involve coating one side of the extruded foam (AB foam) or both sides (ABA form). The skins can be solid or foamed. Alternatively, a cylinder is formed from an annular die and, preferably, a cylindrical cooling mandrel. By extruding and drawing the cylinder of foam onto a cooled cylindrical mandrel, which expands the diameter of the cylinder, the optimum physical properties of the structure can be achieved. This is because the foam structure is stretched in longitudinal and lateral directions. Preferable, the foaming polymer has “inherent melt strength” and “strain hardening” so that the foam cells are more consistent in size and shape. The preferred polymers are polypropylene or polystyrene.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 7, 2003Publication date: July 21, 2005Inventors: John Bambara, Robert Beckwith, Robert Hooper, Robert Hurley
