Publication number: 20040123347Abstract: The current invention provides the water-deficit-inducible promoters derived from the 5′ regulatory region of a HVA22, HSP17.5, RAB17 or CA4H genes. Such water-deficit-inducible promoters are operably linked to heterologous DNA of a gene of interest in a DNA construct which can be used for producing transgenic plants which can express a gene of interest under water-deficit induced conditions. The invention provides transgenic plants having such DNA constructs incorporated into their genome.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2003Publication date: June 24, 2004Inventors: Brendan S. Hinchey, Robert J. Bensen, Donald E. Nelson

Patent number: 5877400Abstract: The invention discloses a transgenic method for producing parthenocarpic fruits or fruits with reduced seed number. It involves the temporal expression of a plant hormone or precursor or other such gene so that gibberellin or other similar hormonal activity involved in initiating fruit set activity is potentiated. The gene is operably linked to a regulatory promoter so that expression is timed prior to pollen development or fertilization. Expression of the hormone causes fruit development in the absence of fertilization. The method also results in a fruit that has diminished or very little seed. The invention also includes transgenic constructs, vectors, and methods for production of the parthenocarpic plants.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1996Date of Patent: March 2, 1999Assignee: Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.Inventors: Dwight T. Tomes, Paul D. Miller, Robert J. Bensen

Patent number: 5773288Abstract: Genes controlling gibberellic biosynthesis are used in genetic engineering to alter plant development. Alterations in the nature or quantity of products of the genes affects plant development. A family of An genes in monocots encodes a cyclase involved in the early steps of gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthesis. Members of the family are identified in wheat, barley, sorghum and maize. Two members of the family, the genes An1 and An2, are identified in maize. The An1 gene is cloned and the function of the gene is characterized. An2 is isolated and identified by homology to An1. Using recombinant genetic technology, GA levels are manipulated. Changes in GA levels alter monocot plant phenotypes, for example, increasing or decreasing height and fertility.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1995Date of Patent: June 30, 1998Assignee: Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.Inventors: Steven P. Briggs, Robert J. Bensen
