  • Publication number: 20040171155
Abstract: Human pre-formed xenoantibodies play an important role in the hyperacute rejection response in human xenotransplantation. Disclosed are materials and methods for removing or neutralizing such antibodies. Also disclosed are materials and methods for reducing or eliminating the epitopes in the donor organs that are recognized by such antibodies. Such epitopes are formed as the result of activity by the enzyme &agr;-1,3 galactosyltransferase. The porcine gene encoding &agr;-1,3 galactosyltransferase is disclosed, as are materials and methods for inactivating (“knocking out”) the &agr;-1,3 galactosyltransferase gene in mammalian cells and embryos. Included are nucleic acid constructs useful for inactivating the &agr;-1,3 galactosyltransferase gene in a target cell. Also disclosed is a novel leukemia inhibitory factor (T-LIF) that is useful for maintenance of embryonic stem cells and primordial germ cells in culture.

  • Patent number: 6556905
Abstract: Vehicle monitoring arrangement tracks and records vehicle operation for post vehicle use supervision. In one specific embodiment, a record of vehicle-operation data contains periodic recordings of speed and direction of a vehicle while it was being driven, as such data is provided by a conventional electronic compass and the vehicle's electronic speed indicating signal. A processor performs calculations using speed and directional data to calculate acceleration and rate of directional change. Vehicle operation data from the recording devices and the calculations performed is compared to stored reference data to determine if the vehicle was abused or driven in an unsafe manner by the operator. The data is output to a display showing vehicle operating data and instances where the vehicle was abused or driven in an unsafe manner.

Disclosed are materials and methods for removing or neutralizing such antibodies. Also disclosed are materials and methods for reducing or eliminating the epitopes in the donor organs that are recognized by such antibodies. Such epitopes are formed as the result of activity by the enzyme .alpha.-1,3 galactosyltransferase. The porcine gene encoding .alpha.-1,3 galactosyltransferase is disclosed, as are materials and methods for inactivating ("knocking out") the .alpha.-1,3 galactosyltransferase gene in mammalian cells and embryos. Included are nucleic acid constructs useful for inactivating the .alpha.-1,3 galactosyltransferase gene in a target cell. • Patent number: 5507379
Abstract: A coin sorter for sorting mixed coins by denomination includes a rotatable disc, a drive motor for rotating the disc, and a stationary sorting head having a lower surface generally parallel to the upper surface of the rotatable disc and spaced slightly therefrom. The lower surface of the sorting head forms a plurality of exit channels for guiding coins of different denominations to different discharge stations around the periphery of the disc. A plurality of coin sensor/discriminators are mounted in the stationary sorting head over the rotatable disc for discriminating between valid and invalid coins guided by said stationary sorting head. At least one coin sensor/discriminator is mounted in each of the plurality of exit channels.

  • Patent number: 5480348
Abstract: A coin sorter for sorting mixed coins by denomination. The apparatus comprises a rotatable disc which has a resilient surface for receiving coins and imparting rotational movement to the coins. A stationary sorting head has a contoured surface spaced slightly away from and generally parallel to the resilient surface of the rotatable disc. The stationary sorting head sorts and discharges coins of different denominations at different exits around the periphery of the stationary sorting head. The sorting head includes a separate exit channel for each denomination of coin, and a sensor for each coin denomination within the exit channel for that denomination. An encoder monitors the movement of a sensed coin on the rotating disc downstream of the sensors by monitoring the angular movement of the disc. Further, a coin discriminator is used to detect foreign and counterfeit coins and to prevent the detected invalid coins from being discharged with the valid coins.

  • Patent number: 5053331
Abstract: DNA sequence of S-genes which encode S-proteins and control the self-incompatibility reaction in gametophytic self-incompatible plants have been identified. The DNA sequence encoding several S-proteins of N. alata and their attendant signal sequences are specifically provided. Regulatory sequences which direct expression of the S-genes in reproduction tissue of self-incompatible plants have also been identified. A method for the identification and isolation of cDNA and genomic DNA coding sequences of the S-genes is described.

  • Patent number: 4916439
Abstract: Disclosed are two arrangements for remotely indicating the status of a washing machine and/or a dryer. In one arrangement, a current sense circuit is employed along with an optional vibration sense circuit to detect whether or not the washing machine or the dryer are on or off. At a change from on-to-off or from off-to-on, the status of the washing machine or dryer is transmitted over the air to a receiver for status display to the operator. In the second arrangement, detection of the status is internal to the washing machine and the dryer and the status includes additional information such as the type of cycle and the amount of time left before the cycle finishes. To avoid constant transmission of such information, the receiver includes a timer which is synchronized to the washing machine/dryer timing circuits.
