Abstract: An improved rudder for tiller steered sailboats is disclosed wherein a rudder support member is rotatably mounted on an axial support located substantially at the waterline in the aft central portion of a boat. A rudder support guide or track is preferably mounted at a radius defined by the rudder support from the axial support and both supports and locks the rudder support at a desired angle so that the rudder may be maintained at a desired angle with respect to the surface of the water. A spring loaded locking pin preferably locks the rudder support at a desired angle and is attached via a cable to a remote hand release located at the distal end of the tiller for remote operation. A rudder level detection device is also disclosed for use with the present invention which determines the optimum angle of the rudder support of the present invention.
