Patent number: 5349177Abstract: An image intensifier tube that utilizes a photoresponsive layer for producing electrons in response to received radiation, a solid state electron amplifier for multiplying the electrons produced by the photoresponsive layer, a cold cathode for emitting electrons into vacuum, and a phosphor screen for converting impinging electrons into a visible image. The solid state electron amplifier is formed as a semiconductive layer interposed in between a photoresponse layer and a negative electron affinity layer on the photocathode. The solid state electron amplifier receives the electrons produced by the photoresponsive layer, multiplies the electrons and directs the electrons to the negative electron affinity layer. The negative electron affinity layer then directs the electrons through a vacuum to the phosphor screen producing a viewed image.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1993Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: ITT CorporationInventors: Nils I. Patent number: 5266425Abstract: A method for fabricating a stripe color filter for the input of an image intensifier having a color-interpretive CCD output includes ascertaining CCD subpixel-to input coordinate correlation by test illumination with a positioning laser having low power. Based upon the correlation data assembled, light sensitive filter media, such as color tinted photoresist is exposed at those locations corresponding to like-color CCD subpixels. The media is then developed to form filter media. Subsequent coatings of photoresist of the next color are applied and exposed etc.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1992Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Assignee: ITT CorporationInventor: Robert J. Field, Jr.

Patent number: 5241170Abstract: A fiber optic viewing device has in a first embodiment, a color-preserving image intensifier positioned at the viewing end thereof. In a second embodiment, an input light source is sequentially modulated through a cycle of wavelength sets. The resulting image is intensified and recolored by an output recoloring filter which is synchronized with the input light modulation. In yet another embodiment, a set of red, green and blue LEDs are sequentially modulated by a controller to provide input light. A CCD camera receives the resultant intensified image and converts it to video format. A video processor stores frames during a cycle of modulation and then integrates the frames for viewing in full color.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1992Date of Patent: August 31, 1993Assignee: ITT CorporationInventors: Robert J. Field, Jr., Peter L. Toch

Patent number: 5233183Abstract: An image intensifier device for producing a color output image includes in a proximity focused intensifier tube, an RGB color filter matrix screen printed upon a glass wafer which is laminated to the input faceplate of the tube and sandwiched between the faceplate and the photocathode. The RGB matrix filters incident light into RGB components which are amplified by the tube. The output image is colorized in a first embodiment by passing white light fluorescing from a phosphor layer through an RGB output filter matrix which is functionally aligned in an operating tube with the input matrix. In a second embodiment, a UV emanating phosphor layer excites an RGB matrix of secondary phosphors. In a third embodiment, IR filters are included in the RGB input matrix and a narrow band output filter is assigned to represent IR information in the RGB output matrix. In a fourth embodiment a plurality of RGB phosphors replace the phosphor layer of the previous embodiments and directly fluoresce color information.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1991Date of Patent: August 3, 1993Assignee: ITT CorporationInventor: Robert J. Patent number: 5229600Abstract: A color preserving image intensifier having synchronously reciprocating input and output multi-segmented, multi-color filter slides. To compensate for differences in exposure time of the segments of the filters arising from varying reciprocation velocity due, e.g. to sinusoidal motion, either the intensity of the output image is variably filtered or the intensifier gain is varied. In one embodiment, polarizing filters rotated in synchronicity with the reciprocation of the color preserving filters vary image intensity. In another embodiment, intensifier gain is varied based upon a velocity indicator.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1992Date of Patent: July 20, 1993Assignee: ITT CorporationInventor: Robert J. Field, Jr.

Patent number: 5168528Abstract: A differential electronic imaging system has a diode array camera and a plurality of A/D processing circuits connected to the respective diode pixel elements in parallel. The A/D processing circuits are operated in successive frame periods including a first partial period for processing an object-plus-FBP image and a second partial period for processing a fixed background pattern (FBP) image, in order to derive digital differential image data representing the object image alone. The use of parallel processing eliminates the bottleneck of conventional serial processing of the pixels of the image plane, and permits better sensitivity and image resolution. The use of the A/D processing circuits for direct conversion of the object-plus-FBP image minus the FBP image in each frame period eliminates readout noise, high frequency noise errors, FBP drift errors, and storage requirements for the FBP image.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1990Date of Patent: December 1, 1992Assignee: ITT CorporationInventor: Robert J. Field, Jr.

Patent number: 5162647Abstract: A color image intensifier device combines an image intensifier tube providing monochrome output with input and output color members each having a plurality of color portions for passing respective different light frequencies. The input color member filters the incoming light to the tube for each light spectrum band in timed succession, and the monochrome output of the tube passes through the output color menber to produce a corresponding color component output. The color component outputs are perceived by the eye as a complete color image if the timed modulation of the incoming image is above the threshold level for flicker. In a mechanical version, the color members are input and output color wheels rotated in tandem at the input and output ends of the image intensifier tube. The filter members may also be arranged in the form of linearly reciprocating slides or planes movable in two dimensions. The color members can also be stationary filters which change color by electronic control.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1991Date of Patent: November 10, 1992Assignee: ITT CorporationInventor: Robert J.
