Publication number: 20150289090Abstract: A system and method for automatically adjusting medical displays is arranged to communicate medical information to a caregiver. The system includes at least one display for displaying medical information, a wireless communication device associated with the display and a wireless communication device associated with the caregiver. The wireless communication device associated with the display is arranged to realize if the wireless communication device associated with the caregiver, and thus the caregiver, is present in a predetermined area near the display. A controller associated with the display is arranged to automatically adjust at least one characteristic of the display based upon the realized presence of the caregiver. According to the method, the presence of the caregiver is detected when the caregiver enters the predetermined area near the display. At lease one characteristic of the display is thus adjusted automatically based upon the detected presence of the caregiver in the predetermined area.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 19, 2015Publication date: October 8, 2015Applicant: GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANYInventors: Craig R. Tolmie, Russell C. Ward, Susan A. Meyers, Robert J. Koch

Patent number: 5878190Abstract: A heated humidifier for an infant incubator wherein the water in the water reservoir is heated by an active heater located above the surface of the water and a heat exchanger that transfers heat from the active heater and which extends downwardly to a point beneath the water surface to heat the water. In the preferred embodiment, the heat exchanger is an extruded member in the shape of an I-beam to transfer the heat from an electric heater above the surface of the water to heat the volume of water in the reservoir to create water vapor.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1997Date of Patent: March 2, 1999Assignee: Ohmeda Inc.Inventors: David A. Gloyd, Emigdio A. Uribe, Robert J. Koch, Harry E. Belsinger, Jr.

Patent number: 5376761Abstract: An in bed infant scale for use with an infant care center and which may be slid underneath the infant platform of the infant care center while the infant is positioned within the center and which causes little disruption to the infant. The infant scale is thus movable from infant care center to infant care center conveniently. The infant scale is easily slid into the infant care center and raises the infant platform on which the infant is positioned such that the infant platform is raised off of its position on its supporting frame and becomes fully supported on the infant scale. Thus the infant scale can weigh the infant platform and the infant resting on that infant platform.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1993Date of Patent: December 27, 1994Assignee: Chmeda Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Koch, Christopher Dykes

Patent number: 4936824Abstract: An infant incubator is disclosed having a hood that encloses the infant compartment. In the base of the incubator is the heating air and ducting means and which provides heated through an ever open outlet in the base and which heated air passes from the base through a flow path formed by the hood that circulates around the infant and re-enters the base through an inlet. That heated air is thus introduced into or along the access door in the front of the hood from the outlet and travels through or along the access door and through or along the hood around the infant and is returned to the base for recirculation. The hood itself is pivotally attached to the base at the rear of the incubator so that it can be opened from the front for complete access to the infant. The access door in the front of the hood is pivotally attached to the incubator base and can also be opened for access to the infant. When the access door is in its closed position, it forms part of the air path for the heated air.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1987Date of Patent: June 26, 1990Assignee: The BOC Group, Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Koch, Anthony D. Buttitta

Patent number: 4809677Abstract: A heater traverse mechanism used with an infant care center is disclosed. The traverse mechanism allows the heater that is focused on or about the infant positioned on the infant care center to be moved aside for better access to the infant, yet, as the heater is moved, the traverse mechanism automatically adjusts the heater such that its focus remains on the infant so that even at various points along a locus, the footprint of heat on or about the infant remains relatively constant.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1987Date of Patent: March 7, 1989Assignee: The BOC Group, Inc.Inventors: Michael H. Mackin, Robert J. Koch

Patent number: 4773392Abstract: A handhole for use on an incubator is disclosed and which comprises only two main components, an injection molded frame attachable to the incubator by hand tightened screws and an injection molded door that is hingedly attached to the frame to pivot between open and closed positions. A bump or projection is formed on the side of the door or flange between the door and frame such that when the door is in its closed position, the bump is caught between the frame and door to cause bending of the door. By location and size of the bump, the amount of bending can be determined such that, when unlatched, the door will spring open a predetermined amount. Thus, the door's flexibility causes initial opening thereof without the need for springs or other accessories. As an added feature, the injected molded frame may include a flange for attaching a conventional wristlet thereto.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Assignee: The BOC Group, Inc.Inventor: Robert J. Patent number: 4334629Abstract: A counterbalance mechanism is disclosed for offsetting the normal gravitational forces exerted on a rotatable cylindrical hood for an incubator. The mechanism includes a specially shaped cam that is fixed with respect to the rotatable hood. A cam follower, mounted on a slide movable with the rotatable hood, is spring biased against the cam. As the rotatable hood is moved to various positions, the spring loading and cam profile coact to produce a counter-rotational force that is opposite and equal to the force of gravity acting upon the hood at any point in its rotation. One or more detents is provided in the cam at predetermined positions such that the cam follower can be positioned within one of the detents at one or more desired positions of hood rotation such that the hood may be held at that selected position.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1981Date of Patent: June 15, 1982Assignee: Airco, Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Koch, Douglas D. Carden, Michael H. Mackin

Patent number: 4321913Abstract: An improved infant incubator is disclosed having a cylindrical shaped transparent hood which provide considerable accessibility to the infant. The cylindrically shaped hood consists of a plurality of sections rotatable about a central axis. The sections may be individually opened to give limited access to the infant or totally rotated to a position beneath the infant support structure such that access may be had from all sides of the incubator without obstructions. Heating of the incubator compartment is achieved by a unique means of circulating heated air through a double wall construction of the hood. The air is heated in a compartment beneath the infant and the warm air enters one of the hood sections and circulates through that section whereupon it is transferred serially to the next section and eventually can be received back into the heater compartment from the hood sections for recirculation. A fan and heater are located in the heater compartment for heating and circulating the air.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 1980Date of Patent: March 30, 1982Assignee: Airco, Inc.Inventors: James Maluta, John H. Wasson, Robert J. Koch
