  • Patent number: 5453471
Abstract: A process for producing polymers in a gas phase reactor by continuously introducing a stream of monomer and gas into a polymerization zone while maintaining the temperature within the polymerization zone below the dew point temperature of at least one monomer present in said polymerization zone.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 2, 1994
Date of Patent: September 26, 1995
Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology Corporation
Inventors: Robert J. N. Bernier, Robert L. Boysen, Robert C. Brown, Leonard S. Scarola, Gary H. Williams
  • Patent number: 5409646
Abstract: A method for compounding at least one polymerized alpha-olefin resin in an extruder including a screw having a feeding section, a melting section, and a venting section, which method includes: (1) introducing the resin and a heat transfer medium into the feeding section such that the resin is maintained at a temperature below its melting point; (2) transporting the resin and heat transfer medium to the melting section such that the resin is at a temperature which is at or just above its melting point by sublimation or vaporization of the heat transfer medium and kneading the resin at a temperature which is at or just above its melting point; (3) passing a resin melt of step (2) through a melt seal into a venting section wherein the heat transfer medium is released from the extruder; and (4) pumping the resin melt out of the extruder.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 29, 1993
Date of Patent: April 25, 1995
Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology Corporation
Inventors: Raghunath G. Menon, Robert J. N. Bernier, Albert L. Legg
  • Patent number: 5324798
Abstract: A finishing process for a polymer containing an active catalyst residue. Starting polymer has a crystallinity of less than 10 percent by weight and is maintained in an essentially oxygen free reaction zone at a temperature less than polymer sticking temperature. The polymer is stabilized and acids neutralized by adding 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-alkyl phenol and/or alkyl -3-(3-5 -di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy phenyl)- propionate and zinc oxide, hydrotalcite, or a zeolite. Resulting polymer is then treated with catalyst deactivators including water, and then mixed with photo-oxidative stabilizers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 28, 1992
Date of Patent: June 28, 1994
Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology Corporation

  • Patent number: 5051456
Abstract: A process for removing diene from ethylene propylene diene monomer resin by subjecting said resin containing diene monomer to microwave energy in an amount for a time sufficient to evolve diene vapors while simultaneously passing a gas through said resin to removing said evolved diene vapors.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 30, 1990
Date of Patent: September 24, 1991
Assignee: Union Carbide Chemicals and Plastics Technology Corporation
Inventors: Robert J. N. Bernier, David N. Edwards, Richard W. Wegman
  • Patent number: 4731438
Abstract: The deactivation of Ziegler-Natta catalyst and organometallic cocatalyst residues present in the olefin polymer resins produced by the fluidized bed polymerization process is accomplished in a purge vessel by contacting the olefin polymer resin with an inert purge gas containing water the latter being present in said inert purge gas in an amount to establish and maintain a moisture front region in the resin bed of said purge vessel as to create a region above said moisture front substantially free of water and wherein deactivation of said catalyst and cocatalyst are effected in said moisture front region.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 30, 1986
Date of Patent: March 15, 1988
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
