  • Patent number: 8079718
Abstract: A projector has a transmissive spatial light modulator backlit by a collimated illuminator that includes a light source that outputs red, green, blue (RGB) light, and a combiner disposed in light-receiving relation to the light source for mixing or combining the RGB light. The combiner has cavity features associated therewith for outputting collimated light, where such light preferably has a divergent cone angle less than plus or minus fifteen degrees (+/?15°).

  • Patent number: 7377657
Abstract: An image presentation device (100) includes a set of color light sources (122, 124, 126) and a micro-display panel (150) capable of operating in both image processing and non-image processing modes. A sensor (170) is coupled to the micro-display device (150) to convert light received from the light source (122, 124, 126) into a signal value representing the output from the light source (122, 124, 126). A controller (110), responsive to the signal value, selectively and/or collectively varies the input to each of the individual light sources (122, 124, 125) to provide for consistent operating performance over the life of the product.

  • Patent number: 7325957
Abstract: A polarized light illumination system includes a light emitting diode (LED) (601, 602, 603) for providing a source of light that is directed to a non-polarizing dichroic combiner (607) for combining light from the LEDs into a single light source. A power beam splitter (PBS) (608) is then used for splitting the single light source into polarized light components and an output waveguide (611) operates to provide a source of uniformly illuminated light. A condenser lens (612) then projects the uniformly illuminated light to a microdisplay panel (613) for use with a television receiver or other type of display monitor.

  • Patent number: 7261453
Abstract: A light illumination apparatus and method for providing a light source includes light emitting diodes (LEDs) (101, 102, 103) and optical waveguides (104, 105, 106) associated with the light sources for guiding the light to the nonpolarized dichroic combiner (107). The dichroic combiner (107) combines the light from the wave guides into a single light source. Lenses (207, 208, 209) may also be used to focus light from the waveguides to the dichroic combiner (107). The invention provides an efficient approach to provide a single source of light using LEDs.
